  2. Euphrates River The Euphrates River flows parallel to the Tigris River. The area between the rivers is called the Fertile Crescent or Mesopotamia. Because the river is such an important resource, it is a source of conflict between Syria and Turkey.

  3. Drip Irrigation – the practice of using small pipes that slowly drip water just above ground to conserve water used for crops.

  5. Rub Al - Khali The largest desert in Southwest Asia, about the size of Texas. Known as the Empty Quarter because it was thought to be uninhabited.

  6. Rain Shadow Occurs when mountains block the passage of rain producing weather systems, causing a shadow of dryness behind them.

  7. Salt Flat Predominantly found in rain shadows, salt flats occur when moisture evaporates from the soil leaving only harsh chemicals behind.

  8. Straits of Hormuz Strategically important waterway connecting the Arabian sea and the Persian Gulf. It is the only way to access the oil fields in Kuwait.

  17. Shiite Destiny • Shiites make up the majority of Muslims in Iraq; whereas Sunnis make up the majority of Muslims worldwide. • Sunnis consider themselves more enlightened and look down upon the Shiites because they are more conservative.

Problems with a united Palestinian state • The Gaza Strip is controlled by Hamas • The West Bank is controlled by Fatah • Gaza and the West Bank are separated by the country of Israel • The U.S. and E.U. support Fatah because they are more moderate, but that only irritates Palestinians. • Hamas is considered by many in the world to be a terrorist organization.

  19. Zionism – a Jewish movement to reclaim the holy land and create the state of Israel. This caused the issues with the Palestinian people.

  21. Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) • Helps member countries control worldwide oil prices by adjusting prices and production quotas. • Helps protect member countries interests • Very powerful organization

  22. Oil • Strategic Commodity – a resource that is so important that nations will go to war to ensure it steady supply • Saudi Arabia has used its oil profits to improve the infrastructure.
