Comparative Mortality Levels in Captive Animal Species: Insights and Trends

This study explores mortality levels among various species of captive animals, with a focus on data from 1998 to 2003. A total of 51 species were analyzed, examining factors influencing survivorship and life expectancy calculations, including the Gompertz function for the last 2% of life. Results indicate that certain species, such as raptors and crocodilians, exhibit better longevity at older ages, while mortality rates are lower among females in several categories. Comparisons with humans and rodents further highlight differing mortality models and demographic trends.
