Today’s Discussion Questions • How long did it take the Israelites to reach Canaan? • Who becomes the leader after Moses dies? • What happens in the Battle of Jericho? • After the death of Joshua, who do the Israelites look to for leadership? • Who were some of the judges mentioned in the bible? • Who were the Phoenicians? • How did the alphabet make things easier?

  3. Reaching Canaan • It took the Israelites about 40 years to reach Canaan. • Moses never lived to see the promised land • After Moses dies, a leader named Joshua took over and led them to Canaan. • When they arrived, they found people already living there. • They were mostly Canaanites

  4. Going into Battle • Israelites believed it was God’s will that they conquer the Canaanites, so Joshua led them to the city of Jericho. • They marched around the city walls for 6 days while priest blew trumpets • On the 7th day, the trumpets sounded and the walls crumbled allowing the Israelites to overrun the city • Joshua led the Israelites into three more wars. • The land they captured was divided among the 12 tribes .

  5. Fighting Judges • After Joshua dies, the Israelites looked to judges for leadership. • Judges were usually a military that commanded 1 or 2 tribes. • The Bible tells about Barak, Gideon, Samuel, Eli, and Samson. • It also tells of a woman judge named Deborah.

  6. Deborah • Deborah told Barak to attack the army of the Canaanite king Jabin. • She went along to the battlefield as an advisor. • With her help, Barak and 10,000 Israelites destroyed king Jabin and his army in 1125BC. • Over time, the Israelites won control of the hilly region in central Canaan. • The Canaanites kept the flat coastal areas.

  7. The Phoenician Alphabet • The Phoenicians were skilled sailors and traders that lived in cities along the Mediterranean Sea. • Their ships carried goods across the Mediterranean to Greece, Spain, and even western Africa. • Through trade they spread ideas and goods. • One of their most important ideas was the alphabet. • The alphabet made writing simpler and helped people keep records. • The alphabet was passed on to the Greeks then Romans.
