  2. The Promised Land cont… It took the Israelites about 40 years to reach Canaan. Along the way, Moses dies and Joshua took over When the Israelites reached Canaan(The Promised Land) they found a group of people called the Canaanites living there. Believing it was God’s will, Joshua leads the Israelites into battle against the Canaanites.

  3. The Promised Land cont. Jericho was a city that Israelites needed to capture in order to get control of Canaan. Joshua led them into battle. They marched around the walls of the city for six days. On the seventh day, the Israelites let out a shout and the walls of Jericho crumbled.

  4. The Promised Land cont. Joshua went on to lead the Israelites in three more wars. The land the Israelites seized was divided among the 12 tribes of Israel. After Joshua’s death, Israelites looked to Judges for leadership.

  5. The Promised Land cont. Judges were usually military leaders that commanded 1 to 2 tribes. The Bible tells about Samuel, Eli, Samson, and many others that were Judges. A female, Deborah, helped the Israelites captured parts of Canaan that was still under the power of the Canaanites.

  6. The Promised Land Cont. A group of the Canaanites known as the Phoenicians created an alphabet. Alphabet is a group of letters that stand for sounds. This was eventually passed onto the Romans and then onto the Western world. Most Western alphabets are based on the alphabet created by the Phoenicians.

  7. ANY QUESTIONS?

  8. The Kingdom of Israel The Israelites had many enemies. They choose a king to help unite them together and fight their enemies. The Israelites feared the Philistines. The Israelites feared them so much that they copied their ways of life and worshiped their gods.

  9. The Kingdom of Israel The of 12 tribes of Israel begin to quarrel a lot among themselves. To save their religion they ask the prophet Samuel to choose a king. Samuel would not name a king and he warned them against a king. Israelites demanded a king. They go on to name King Saul as the first king of Israel. Samuel anoints Saul king.

  10. The Kingdom of Israel Saul was very successful and won many battles for the Israelites. He rules Israel for over 40 years Saul becomes jealous of the young David. This causes Saul to lose favor with God. Saul eventually dies and God chooses another king to rule Israel.

  11. The Kingdom of Israel David was a successful king. He drove the Philistines out of Israel and conquered other empires. David had those he conquered pay tributes(taxes or slaves paid to a stronger ruler) to him and the Israelite empire. David established a very large, wealthy empire. The capital of David’s Israeli empire was Jerusalem.

  12. The Kingdom of Israel David was Israel’s king for over 40 years. When David died his son Solomon took over and ruled Israel. Solomon is given credit for building the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. When Solomon died the 12 tribes of Israel began to fight. Refer to map on page 90…”Ancient Israel”

  13. The Kingdom of Israel The fighting among the tribes caused ten tribes to move to the north and called their nation the kingdom of Israel. The other two tribes moved to the south and called their kingdom Judah. The capital of Judah was Jerusalem and the people of Jerusalem were called Jews.

  14. The Kingdom of Israel While the Israelites fought among themselves and became divided the Assyrians and Chaldeans were building empires in southwest Asia. The Assyrians conquered Israel in 722B.C. and scattered the 10 tribes across the empire. The Assyrians settled the area around Samaria and became known as the Samaritans.

  15. The Kingdom of Israel The Samaritans feared Israel’s God might punish them for taking Israel’s land so they offered sacrifices to the God of Israel. They read the Torah and followed Israelites’ religious laws. The Samaritans worshiped the one God of Israel The Israelites of Judah lookeddown on the Samaritans. They believed that God only accepted sacrifices from the temple of Jerusalem

  16. The Kingdom of Israel Only the small kingdom of Judah was left of the once proud empire of David. Egypt eventually conquers Judah. The Chaldeans eventually conquer Egypt and in doing so the Chaldeans also gain control of Judah. King Nebuchadnezzar and the Chaldeans capture Jerusalem and punish the Jews.

  17. The Kingdom of Israel King Nebuchadnezzar sends 10,000 Jews to Babylon. In 586 B.C. the Jews tried to revolt against the Chaldeans. The Chaldean ruler crushed Jerusalem. The Chaldeans and the king took thousands of Jews to Babylon. This time period is known as the Babylonian Captivity.
