Implementation Timeline • Science Standard Adopted by State Board of Education in May 2004. • School year 2004/2005 transition year • School year 2005/2006 mandatory implementation year • Science added to Standards Declaration signed by district’s governing board, superintendent, and principals.

  3. Science Assessment • Students in 4th and 8th grade assessed annually on grade level standard. • High school students assessed at end of high school biology class (taken in either 9th or 10th grade). **Not a graduation requirement • Students in non-AIMS Science grades demonstrate grade level knowledge and skills on district/classroom assessments.

  4. Assessment Development Timeline • April 2005: Preliminary Blueprints drafted • June 2005: Blueprints updated and preliminary test specifications drafted, including PO clarifications • September 2005: Test Item Set specifications and examples drafted. • December 2005: Review and edit Item Set specifications.

  5. Assessment Development Timeline • January 2006: Blueprint and Test specifications completed. • February 2006: Item writing for discrete items and item sets. • June 2006: Content and bias review • Spring 2007: Field Testing • Spring 2008: Operational AIMS Science

  6. Draft AIMS Science Blueprint Blueprint is not final and is subject to change.

  7. AIMS Science Overview • Strands 1, 2, and 3 are taught within the context of Strands 4, 5, and 6. • Test items for objectives within Strands 1-3 written within the context of the grade level standard for Strands 4, 5, or 6 . • For high school, test items for objectives within Strands 1-3 written with the context of Strand 4 only.

  10. Reference Library Database • Searchable database of trade books (fiction and non-fiction) aligned to Arizona Academic Standards. • Teachers can add books to the database • Available through IDEAL (anticipated January 2006)

  11. Annenberg Online PDwww.learner.org Science First Hand This video library for grade 7-9 science teachers shows the process of teaching physical science through hands-on projects. Science in Focus: Energy This video workshop for K-6 teachers explores the scientific meaning of energy and examines the role it plays in motion, machines, the body, and the universe. Science in Focus: Shedding Light on Science This video workshop for K-5 teachers uses light as a theme to explore topics in physics, chemistry, biology, space science, and Earth science. Science K-6: Investigating Classrooms This video library, with separate units for K-6, shows how teachers are incorporating genuine science inquiry into their classrooms. Teaching High School Science This video library for high school teachers shows the practice of effective inquiry teaching in the science classroom.

Math and Science Partnership Grants • Federally funded grant (approx. $3.5 million) administered through the ADE, designed to… • increase number of highly qualified math and/or science teachers •  create sustainable partnerships between LEA (district or school) and college/university math, science, or engineering department • RFP available by late November • Grant application due February or March (TBD) • Grant workshops offered by ADE in Nov/Dec
