  2. Warm-Up • Throughout the year, in this class and in your U.S. History classes, you have learned about the civil rights movements of the 1950s and 1960s. In your writer’s notebook, write down 5 ABSTRACT NOUNS that you believe represent this time period and the people who experienced it firsthand. • Now, write a statement about the tendency of human beings using one of those nouns

  3. Soundtrack Project What makes a good soundtrack? How do all the songs work together to underscore the theme of a film?

  4. Remember the Titans In the early 1970s, two schools in Alexandria, Virginia, integrate forming T.C. Williams High School. The Caucasian head coach of the Titans is replaced by an African American coach from North Carolina. Tensions arise when players of different races are forced together on the same football team. Many of these tensions are eased during the two-week training camp in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. When players returned to Alexandria, they found the city in turmoil due to the forced desegregation of the high school. As the season progresses, the team's success helps the community to accept the changes.

Theme Statement • Let’s compile a list of abstract nouns that we associate with this movie and the Civil Rights Movement • Freedom, Inequality, Discrimination, Change, Progress, Injustice, Love, Hatred, Determination, Fear, Bravery, Knowledge, Truth, Faith, Liberty, Oppression, Despair, Hope, Compassion, Peace, • Choose one from your list or the list above and create one statement about your thoughts on this abstract noun and its connection to humanity/society.

  8. Examples using the abstract noun Courage Without the courage to stand up for what is right there would be no change and progress in society. Progress towards true equality may be slow, but those with the courage to do the right thing continue to remind us of its importance. Until there is true equality, we must continue to have the courage to stand up for what is right. Courage has taken mankind to great new heights, but the summit has yet to be reached. Courage is the not the absence of fear; it is determination to do the right thing despite fear. Courage is the catalyst for change in society.

Gettysburg Scene • Look at the lyrics for “It’s a Hard Rain Gonna Fall” • Look for a lyric and then embed the quote into a sentence that supports your theme statement. • Write a couple sentences of analysis exploring the tone, importance, attitude… of the lyric and it’s connection to your theme statement. • Now let’s watch the scene from the film in which this song plays Gettysburg

  11. Coach Boone’s Speech(Second supporting example) Choose a quote and then embed it within context. Follow it with at least two sentences of analysis. "Anybody know what this place is?  This is Gettysburg.  This is where they fought the Battle of Gettysburg.  Fifty thousand men died right here on this field, fightin' the same fight that we're still fightin' amongst ourselves today.  This green field right here was painted red, bubbling with the blood of young boys.  Smoke and hot lead pouring right through their bodies.  Listen to their souls, men.  'I Killed my brother with malice in my heart.'  'Hatred destroyed my family.'  You listen and you take a lesson from the dead.  If we don't come together right now, then we, too, will be destroyed.  Just like they were.  I don't care if you like each other or not, but you will respect each other, and maybe, I don't know, maybe we'll learn to play this game like men."

  12. Concluding Sentence Create a final last sentence that concludes your thoughts or hopes on the topic. No where in your paragraph should it say “I”.

  14. Example Even though we are equal in rights, discrimination still exists in the shadows. (Theme Statement) In the song, “It’s a Hard Rain Gonna Fall”, by Bob Dylan, he lists very negative, sad scenes such as “black branch dripping with blood…” and “ten thousand whisperin’ and nobody listenin”. (Example from Song) This is incredibly depressing and melancholy. It reminds us of the cruelty of the past. Hopefully society will change and fix their mistakes. (Analysis of Song) Similarly in Remember the Titans, Coach Boone takes his players to the battle site Gettysburg and tells them “if we don’t come together right now, then we, too, will be destroyed.” (Example from Movie – This will be an example from the novel in your project) The tone is both solemn and serious, but also hopeful. It isn’t too late for these young men to make a change for the better. (Analysis of Movie) Perhaps one day we can actually say racism is a thing of the past and we will have progressed as a species in reaching the truest sense of equality. (Concluding Sentence)

We have our disagreements, of course, but before we reach for hate, always, always, we remember the Titans. Bertier: I was afraid of you, Julius. I only saw what I was afraid of, and now I know I was only hating my brother. Big Ju: I'll tell you what, though. Um, when all this is over... me and you are gonna move out to the same neighborhood together. OK? And, um... and we'll get old, and we'll get fat. And there ain'tgonna be all this black-white between us.

Second Example to Support Theme • Look at the lyrics for “Peace Train” – the song playing in the background • Choose a lyric from the song that supports your statement and embed it in context. • Analyze the lyric and it’s connection to the theme. Think about attitude, tone, implications… • Finish your paragraph with a concluding sentence

  17. Example Paragraph #2 It is important that we keep fighting for the freedom of all humanity and although progress is slow, it continues to give us hope for a better future. For example, in Remember the Titans, the two captains of the football team went from fighting each other and having hatred in their hearts to becoming best friends who led their team and the town to realize friendship should not be based on skin color. Bertier tells Julius, “I realize now I was only hating my brother.” This inspires one to look beyond the appearance of others and take the time to get to know the individual. It leaves the viewer feeling hopeful and encouraged. Further exploring this theme of hope is Kat Stevens song, “Peace Train”. He invites everyone to “ride on the peace train…go bring your good friends too…soon it will all be true.” The fight for equality should be a community effort. It is not the responsibility of the ruling class; it is the responsibility of each individual. The positive vibe in this song lifts spirits and encourages others to do their part. We have proven our ability to change the world time and time again. There is no greater goal than reaching a point where every human life if valued equally.
