What is health? • Health- is the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well being. (3 components of health) • Physical • Mental/emotional • Social • Health Education- Providing of accurate health information to help people make healthy choices.
Physical Health • Get eight to ten hours of sleep each night • Eat nutritious meals • Drink eight cups of water each day • Engage in 30-60 minutes of physical activity each day • Avoid the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs • Bathe daily, and floss and brush your teeth every day
Mental/Emotional Health • Enjoy challenges that help them grow • Accept responsibility for your actions • Have a sense of control over your lives • Express emotions in appropriate ways • Can deal with life’s stresses and frustrations • Have a positive outlook • Make thoughtful and responsible decisions
Social Health • Seeking and lending support when needed • Communicating clearly and listening to others • Showing respect and care for yourself and others

Wellness and Prevention • What is wellness- An overall state of well-being or total health. • Wellness comes from: • Keeping a balance among the 3 components of health *Friends are the most important of your life (and that’s about it) *Your social health is fine- but your physical and emotional health is suffering • Prevention- Practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury
Activity • Where is your health and wellness? • With a classmate try to figure out where your health and wellness is lacking (or if it isn’t)? Homework: Am I balanced?
What affects your health? • Hereditary- Traits that were biologically passed on to you from your parents. • Environment- Your surroundings (peers) • Culture- Collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group. • Media/Technology- Methods for communication- has significant influence on your decisions. • Behavior and Choices- People around you, including our family and peers.
Environment/Social Environment/Culture • How would the environment affect your health? • How would the social environment affect your health? • How would the cultural environment affect your health? • How does it affect you?

Activity • Communication Skills- • With a classmate try to persuade a friend to adopt a positive health behavior.
Homework • Family Genogram • How your family affects your health.
Risk Behaviors • Risk Behaviors- Actions that can potentially threaten our health or the health of others.
Personal Health Risk Factors Behaviors that may contribute to intentional or unintentional injuries • Tobacco use • Alcohol and other drug use • Sexual behavior that contributes to unplanned pregnancy, STI’s, and HTV • Unhealthy dietary behaviors • Physical inactivity *How do your friends influence your willingness to take risks? Do they encourage?
Cumulative Risks • Cumulative Risks- Related risks that increase in effect with each added risk. • Example: Smoking one cigarette- is not likely to result in death. Neither is eating one high-fat meal or getting one sunburn. • However, the negative effects accumulate and lead to serious health consequences. • Cumulative risks may also result from combinations of risk factors. • Example: 1. Driving faster than speed limit 2. Not wearing seat belt 3. Driving in bad weather- The combination of these 3 greatly increases the potential to harm yourself or others.
Abstaining from Risk Behaviors • Abstinence- Avoiding harmful behaviors, including the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs, and sexual activity.
Why to Abstain • Abstaining from drugs and alcohol- • They cause physical and psychological effects • Can cause addiction and seriously harm your body • Can cause death
Why to Abstain • Abstaining from Sexual activity- • Not worrying about unplanned pregnancy or making decisions associated with unplanned pregnancy • Not worrying about contracting sexually transmitted infections (including HIV) • Free of emotional problems that accompany sexual activity
Activity • Each group will be given a different risk factor. • Create an appealing idea that will persuade teens (your classmates) to avoid risk factors. Have these ideas include positive actions teens can take.
Promoting Health and Wellness • Develop personal goals/steps to enhance your personal health and wellness. • Remember to take into consideration outside influences when developing your goals/steps to promote healthy behaviors. • Create 3 goals in sequence to enhance your personal health based on family medical history and outside influences

Decision Making • What are decision making skills- Steps that enable you to make healthful decision. • H (Healthful) Does this choice present any health risk? • E (Ethical) Does this choice reflect what you value? • L (Legal) Does this option violate any local, state, or federal laws? • P (Parent Approval) Would your parents or guardians approve of this choice?
5 step model of decision making • ABCDE • A- Assess the problem • B- Brainstorm alternative solutions • C- Consider the consequences • D- Decide and act • E- Evaluate the consequences
Goals • Goals- Things you aim for that take planning and work. • Short-term goal- Goal that you can reach in a short period of time. • Long-term goal- Goal that you plan to reach over an extended period of time. • Action Plan- Strategies to achieve your goals.
Developing an Action Plan • Set specific, realistic goal, and write it down • List the steps you will take to reach your goal • Identify sources of help and support • Set a reasonable time frame for reaching your goal • Evaluate your progress by establishing checkpoints • Reward yourself for achieving your goal
