  1. Oregon Country Manifest Destiny The Oregon country was a huge area of land between the pacific ocean and the Rocky mountains. The US got Oregon and California from a treaty with Britain. A trail called the Oregon trail was located here, it crossed the Snake, Columbia and Platte Rivers. The manifest destiny was the belief that US settlers had to expand from coast to coast. This was first used by John L. Sullivan.

  2. Texas • Stephen F. Austin was the leader of Texas during its revolution. In 1833, Santa Anna was the president of Mexico, and in 1836 he sent Mexican troops to the Alamo, a Spanish mission and killed 300 people there. The same year Texas declared independence on Washington on the Brazos. Sam Houston was the Commander in Chief during the declaration of independence was signed. In 1836, the battle of san jacinto was fought. The war cry was “Remember the Alamo!”, and the Texas army won. The reason Andrew Jackson didn’t want to nnextexas was because he didn’t was to start anything with mexico. In 1845, James polk added the Republic of Texas to the us, making it Texas.

  3. War with Mexico • The states gained were New Mexico, Arizona, California, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. The Santa fe Trail was a trail that ended in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It covered many rivers, such as the Missouri and the Arkansas Rivers. John Fre’Mont described New Mexico as Mild, with abundant resources. This caused many people to settle in this land. During the war, the border of the us and Mexico was a dispute. The Mexicans said that it was the Nueces river, but the Americans said that it was the rio grande.Polk ordered an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss relations with Mexico and decided to go to war. Fredrick Douglass, a free slave in the north described it as cruel and disgraceful. Polk later sent General Winfield Scott to capture Mexico city. The treaty that ended the war on January 18th of 1848 was called the Guadalupe hidalgo treaty. The treaty included the border to be at the rio Grande and that the us got California and New Mexico. In 1853, the Us purchased Arizona and parts of New Mexico in the Gadsden Purchase, which cost about 15 Million dollars.

  4. Settlers in California and Utah • In 1849, settlers started moving to California more to a thing called the gold rush. People who came were called forty niners. They had to pass through the rocky mountains. Also, towns that were there before the gold rush occurred that received a large amount of settlers during the gold rush were called Boom towns. San Francisco was a boomtown, and because of its location, many settlers stayed there after the gold rush. Because of the hard work the settlers had to go through, Levi Strauss created jeans. They were made out of denim, a strong fabric and wouldn’t tear easily. During this time, Joseph Smith created the Mormons. In 1844 he was killed during a riot in his jail. Brigham Young took over and moved to Salt lake City, Utah.
