  1. ASAR Validation Review Introduction • ASAR C.P. Objectives • Challenges in ASAR Cal/Val • Strategy • History of the C.P. main activities • Organisation of the Review B. Rosich ESA-ESRIN

  2. Ensure operational stability and instrument performance in ALL modes Verification of in-flight antenna performance Verification of the internal calibration/instrument gain monitoring External Characterisation of the ASAR Antenna Verify the quality requirements for ALL products and tune the processor / instrument settings if necessary Perform the absolute product calibration: Antenna Pattern determination for all 32 beams and Absolute gain calibration for all beams and modes Demonstrate in-flight ASAR multi-mode interferometry and AP capabilities Validate the new wave mode products Establish the activities to be performed during routine phase Commissioning Phase Objectives

  3. Stability of active phased array 32 transmit/receive beams 5 different operation modes (IM,AP, WS, GM, WV) for science data plus 2 calibration modes (EC, MS) 7 beams (IS1-IS7) for single swath modes: Image, Wave and Alternating Polarization Mode 5 sub-swaths (SS1, IS3-IS6) ScanSAR: Wide Swath and Global Monitoring Mode Complex internal calibration system Challenges in ASAR Instrument Calibration

  6. Establish continuous monitoring of the antenna using special calibration modes. Adjustment of Instrument settings / gains Perform basic processor verification and product calibration. Use of calibration sites at different world locations. Kiruna GS Neustrelitz GS ASAR Tr. Garmisch Radarsat Tr. Bern/Zurich Las Vegas Vietnam Rain Forest Brazil Strategy • Set-up an efficient team to cover all the aspects of the ASAR cal/val • Peform systematic monitoring of key instrument and product quality parameters • Refine/Optimize the Processor and Product quality • First priority on IM, WV and WS in VV polarization. Continuation with HH polarization, AP and GM modes.
