Fact Index Card Sample • Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that usually causes delays in physical and intellectual development. • The leading clinical cause of mental retardation in the world, Down syndrome occurs approximately once in every 600 - 1000 births. It is not related to race, nationality, religion or socioeconomic status. • People with Down syndrome benefit from appropriate medical care, early intervention, education and vocational programs. • There is a wide variation of mental abilities and physical development in individuals with Down Syndrome. • Most individuals are educable with many being included in public school settings and employed in the community as adults.
