Henry • How would you describe the style of this story? Does the author’s tone tell you anything about his attitude toward the characters and events of the narrative?

  3. Theme • “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. • Note Passing activity • “Dead Men’s Path” by Chinua Achebe • How is the simplicity, or the complexity, of the protagonist important in leading you to the theme of this story? • Are we being solicited to entertain mixed feelings about the protagonist, or are we asked to feel unequivocally one way or another about him?  How so?   And why?

  4. Symbol • “The Chrysanthemums” by John Steinbeck • Read critical analysis • How do you interpret Elisa’s asking for wine with dinner? How do you account for her new interest in prizefights? • “The Swimmer” by John Cheever • How does the setting function symbolically? • What textual details lead you to believe that all is not as it seems? • Of what might Needy be a symbol?
