  2. Client Testing Overall, most Bear Access clients run properly under Vista: • Thunderbird (Mail / LDAP)Problems with LDAP and IPv6. Fixed in Thunderbird 2.0Beta which is scheduled for release first half of 2007 • TCP3270 - OK • HostExplorer - OKHummingbird lists HostExplorer 2007 as being certified under Vista. We will probably distribute it in place of HE 2006 • HostExplorer 6.2.0.11- (problematic)Do users still need access to it for new installs and via uPortal? S&O - Client Services

  3. Client Testing (cont) • Sidecar Problem with Fast User Switching (Sidecar 913 call back funtion is scheduled to be phased out and the application given a new name for Fall 2007) • Symantec Client Security (first half of 2007)User could enable the Vista outgoing Firewall • Symantec AntiVirus (V10.2) S&O - Client Services

  4. Non-Bear Access Clients • CUTVInstaller not supported under Vista, and a blue screen of death • Net-PrintNew client undergoing internal testing • EZ-BackupSupported client due out in March • Brio - No change since note published last fall regarding IE7 • VPN – Beta Client available • Oracle CalendarMinor problem with export function S&O - Client Services

  5. Infrastructure Problems • In previous versions of Windows Power and Administrative users were able to write to the Windows and Program Files folders. With the introduction of User Account Control in Vista, Microsoft tightened up security and as a result Bear Access is unable to download and update software. See: http://www.cit.cornell.edu/bearaccess/testing/Vista/fall06_vista.html for complete details. S&O - Client Services

  6. History of Bear Access • Project Mandarin - 1993Bear Access Launch Pad • Project SALSA – 1998Bear Access Via Runway or uPortal.Cornell • Project BASIL - 2006Bear Access Software Installer & Launcher (BASIL) S&O - Client Services

  7. Original Schedule • June 2006: Last release based on SALSA • Fall 2006: BASIL released • January 2007: BASIL is default “BASIL” Launch Pad becomes default in uPortal (Runway still available using the current SALSA infrastructure) • June 2007: Retire SALSA serverRunway would continue to run with updates turned off. S&O - Client Services

  8. Contingency Plans Given that we have not released a version of BASIL for testing we are looking at options for the Fall release. • Fall 2007 Bear Access will be built using existing SALSA infrastructure. • Vista Users:We will document the steps necessary to install the infrastructure component--the clients and other applications--then have them turn off automatic updates. • We do not recommend turning off UAC or running Runway or IE in Administrator mode.
