  1. 8th Grade Advanced Art

  2. 5 – Minute Sketch • In your bright, shiny new sketchbook, complete a 5-minute sketch. Choose something you have with you (a pencil, a phone, a rhinoceros…) and do a sketch of that object. You are only going to spend 5 minutes, so get the basic outline of the object on the page first. Pay special attention to shading to make the object look 3-Dimensional. Put the date by your sketch.

  3. Still Life Examples

  4. Finding the Light • Where is the light source in each of the pictures below?

  5. Reflect and Improve • Pair up and discuss some difficulties you had with accurately drawing your still life drawing. Think of possible solutions to make drawing easier. Be prepared to share your problems and solutions with the class.

  6. Compose Yourself • What are the qualities of a good still life composition? What should you avoid when arranging objects for a still life? Draw two sketches in your sketch book, one illustrating a bad still life composition and one illustrating a good still life composition.

  7. Finding Value • In your sketch book, draw a chart like the one below. You are creating a value scale from light to dark, each shade a little darker than the one before. Make sure you have 8 values in total.

  8. Self-Critique • Now that you have completed your first set of drawings for Advanced Art, critique yourself. Describe one thing you did really well with in your still life drawings. Describe one area where you feel you still need improvement in your drawing skills. Think of one “Next Step” to work on for future projects.

  9. Stippled Value • Below are a few examples of value drawings using stippling. These are examples of what your picture should look like when you are through. What do you notice about these drawings? Make 3 observations about the pictures below that will help you create your picture.

  10. Stippled Sphere • Practice graduating your value using stippling by making a copy of the shaded sphere below, using stippling instead of shading. Do your best to blend the values smoothly.
