  2. Caribbean Diabetic Footcare Project A humanitarian programme by the Rotary Club of Ledbury and the International Diabetes Federation A District 1100 preferred project

  3. Annually, 3.8 million people worldwide die from diabetes – more than HIV/AIDS and malaria combined By 2025 390 million people will have diabetes

  4. Caribbean Islands: 20% have diabetes amputation levels among the world’s highest

  5. Diabetes... Affects nerve endings resulting in loss of feeling and circulation problems Person cannot feel minor skin problems, e.g. splinters The minor skin problem becomes ulcerated

  6. Regular screened diabetes... Skin problems treated to allow ulcers to heal Foot saved

  7. Diabetes untreated... Untreated, the ulcerated skin develops gangrene Amputation is the only solution Lose one leg: 61% die in 5 years 30% lose second leg Lose two legs: 18 months to live

  8. Diabetes is a killerand amputation leads to death 50%-80% of these legs can be saved

  9. How to save a limb

  10. The community cost 38,000 – 65,000 for the loss of a single limb 225 – 675 to save a limb Figures are in US Dollars

  12. How it works Ledbury Club Facilitators, co-ordinators, marketing, raises funds Tobago club Provides local leadership, community & medical links, clinical support Canadian Footcare Specialists Train local staff, treat patients, record results

  13. What does the project do? Raises awareness of diabetes Wins community confidence Trains local staff in modern techniques Trains local tutors to expand the service

  14. Outcome: 2000-2006 Tobago pilot scheme, 2 weeks community training programme annually for 4 years Established 3 footcare clinics 3,750 patients treated 35 staff trained and…

  15. Outcome: 2000-2006 54% fewer amputations 2009 now 70%and funded by TT Government

  16. Footcare project is proven to be Simple Effective Low cost Sustainable Rewarding Saving limbs, lives and families

  18. Partnership February 2008 Ledbury Rotary Club and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) set up an international agreement and partnership

  19. Partnership Expansion into other Caribbean islands and South American countries IDF provided 80,000 US$ as start-up fund

  22. By end 2008 Survey assessed, islands identified and allocated to Rotary clubs Matching Grants approved for Montserrat & Nevis (Ledbury), and British Virgin Islands, St Maarten (Gloucester Severn) Partnership

  23. 2009 Matching Grant applications put on hold by RI Foundation Emergency funding from IDF, WDF and the Rotary host clubs means that Barbados and St Lucia started on time as planned Partnership

  24. Island projects started 2008-9 Barbados BVI Montserrat Nevis St Lucia St Maarten Island projects planned 2010 - 11 St Kitts (Lichfield St Chad) Antigua (Central Chester County, USA) Dominica (Hereford Group of Rotary Clubs??) Grenada Guyana Partnership

  25. To date:- Our International Partnerships raised $211,000 to support projects in 6 Caribbean countries. Rotary has provided $83,000 – ie 40% of funding. (IDF $73,000 and WDF $55,000). District 7030 to set up a District Diabetes committee 10 years work resulted in, at least, 277 staff trained and 70% reduction in limbs lost. Partnership

  26. Support from 23 Clubs UK – Canada - Caribbean Plus personal donations and donations from other organisations including Inner Wheel Partnership

  28. Since the initial session in July 2009: The qualified 27 trainees have now trained another 84 colleagues. “The Flow of Knowledge” Partnership Interim Report from St Lucia (Jan 2010)

  29. Rotary Foundation’s Future Vision puts the emphasis on strategic projects with NGO partners RI Strategic Plan Includes the view to “Carry out a service project recommended by the RI resource group for health and hunger” 2010 and beyond
