  7. Background to ISO Enviromental Standards • ISO 14001 is the Only Formally Certifiable Standard. • All other Standards & Documents are to support and compliment ISO 14001. • The Guidance Document ISO 14004 is specifically designed for Small to Medium Enterprises.- It provides practical help and examples to assist the implementation of ISO 14001. - Each area of ISO 14004 has a ‘practical help’ box where a suitable concrete example is outlined. • ISO 14031outlines lists of indicators for evaluating operations in a company, e.g. amount of cleaning agents used, average fuel consumed by fleet, rate of defective products. The number of indicators should reflect the size & nature of the organization.

  8. ISO 14001 • ISO 14001 – A Commitment to the Continual Environmental Performance of a Company. • It is a fundamental principle of ISO 14001 that organisations set their own targets and goals, and it is on these goals that auditing is carried out.“It should be noted that this International Standard does not establish absolute requirements for environmental performance beyond commitment, in the policy, to compliance with applicable legislation and regulations and to continual improvement. Thus, two organizations carrying out similar activities but having different environmental performance may both comply with its requirements.” – ISO 14001

  9. ISO 14001

  10. ISO 14001 & Products • ISO 14001 only focuses on the organisation and does not certify their products. • The company’s products for example are not guaranteed as being ‘green products’ just because the company has being awarded ISO 14001. • Although there is an additional standard (14062) for use with ISO 14001, its use is optional and the primary standard does not mandate its use. • ISO 14020 – Environmental Labels & Declarations can be used to advertise “Eco-Friendly” products if required.

  11. ISO 14001 & Certification • Option 1: Officially Certify ISO 14001 • Option 2: Self-Declare personal ISO 14001 • Enterprise Ireland Grant Support for SMEs implementing ISO 14001 ?
