  2. Irony • A type of contrast between reality and what you think is reality. • There are three types of irony

  3. Verbal Irony • When someone makes a statement that is ironic • This means that the speaker intends to be understood as meaning something that contrasts with the literal or usual meaning of what he says. • Types of verbal irony that you are most familiar with are sarcasm, over statements, and understatements.

  4. Verbal Irony Examples • “Is this English class?” “No, that’s why it says English on the door.” • “I died laughing at that joke, it was so funny.” • From the “Most Dangerous Game” movie when Zaroff says, “I drink to life.”

  5. Dramatic Irony • When we know something a character does not. • We know the killer is hiding in the closet but they do not. • We know the drink is poisoned, but the character does not. • Surprise parties

  6. Situational Irony • When a situation is ironic • “Professional Swimmer Drowns” • “Plainfield Fire Department Burns” • A couple appears in court to finalize a divorce, but during the proceeding, they remarry instead.
