  2. Pick one of the three articles that we have been working with the past couple of weeks (preferably the one you did your outline over). What are your reactions to this article? Did you agree or disagree with it? Did you have an emotional reaction to it? Why did you choose this particular article? Are there any specific parts of this article that you really enjoyed?   4. Based on the opening shot, why do think that this commercial was made? • Obviously this is a persuasion piece. What is it attempting to persuade its audience of? • What is it claiming to do for their audience? • Why did the author write the article from a particular point of view? • How did the author influence your response to the selection? • Was the author’s purpose specifically stated? • Do you think that the author achieved his/her intended purposes? Did the article effectively give information? Persuade readers to think about something and/or take action? • What examples from the commercial support your conclusions about author’s purpose?   5. How does this commercial attempt to get its points across? • What choices does the advertising team make in order to make their phone seem better? • Be specific here. Is there lines said that are different types of appeals? • How does this commercial attempt to relate to its audience? • Does it work? How could it be done better? You should be going through, word by word, sentence by sentence and conducting a detailed simplification of the paragraph • Simplify complex ideas by pulling them apart • Recast sentences within a paragraph to create a genuine paraphrase • Do not merely change a few words • Do not distort the original meaning or intention • Avoid mirroring the sentence structure or organization of the original • use synonyms for key or unfamiliar words in the original passage Paraphrase Review

To complete your article summary, select one of the articles from the list below OR use a different article chosen by your classroom instructor. Your summary of an article should follow the summary writing guidelines discussed in  Part 3, Section 12f. • Articles to summarize (all from First-Year Writing): • “The New Sovereignty,” Shelby Steele 450;“My Pedagogic Creed,” John Dewey 460;“The American Scholar,” Ralph Waldo Emerson 468 • You may use your outline to help you pick out the main ideas of this article • Your summary should be between 150-200 words • Your summary should beginwith a sentence that identifies the author, title and primary purpose of the text. • There should be no direct quotes in your summary Ba2 - Part 1: Summary

  9. You will paraphrase a brief but complex passage from the same text as your summary. Your goal in this assignment is to restate the ideas of the passage in your own words and do so in a way that is readable and understandable. Identify the page number and paragraph number of the original passage ( page #, paragraph 1) above your paraphrase so that your instructor can easily see the changes you have made to express the ideas of the passage in your own words. There should be no direct quotes in your paraphrase.
