  1. All There is to know about High School Registration Independence High School

  2. The Registration Card • Each student must sign up for enough classes to fill 8 class periods • 8 is the magic number!! • Every student must sign up for English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. • Every student must sign up for electives. • You must choose 3 alternate classes. • ESL Students will meet with Ms. Belous later to help choose your classes

  3. Block vs. A/B Day • Block classes meet every day for one semester • A/B classes meet every other day for the whole year • Must be chosen in A/B day pairs

  4. English • Look at your 7th Grade Reading EOG Score (top right corner) • If you scored a 1or 2 on the Reading EOG, put an XX next to Foundations of English/English I • If you scored a 3 or 4 on the Reading EOG put an X next to English I • If you scored a 5 on the Reading EOG, put an X next to English I Honors • *If you scored a high 4 on your reading EOG and want to take honors, get teacher signature

  5. Math • Look at your Math EOG Score • If you scored a level 1 or 2 on Math EOG put XX beside Foundations of NC Math I/CC Math I • If you scored a level 3 on Math EOG put X beside Math I • If you scored a level 4 or 5 on Math EOG put X beside Honors NC Math I and get a teacher signature • If you are currently in Math I, put an X beside NC Math II UNLESS… • You are currently in Math I and are making an A or high B and had a 5 on your EOG last year, put an X beside Honors NC Math II

  6. Social Studies • Every student will take World History • If you currently have an A in Social Studies and made a 4 or 5 on your Reading EOG, you can choose to put an X beside World History Honors

  7. Science • Reading EOG levels 1, 2, or 3 put X beside Earth/Environmental Science • Reading EOG Level 4 or 5 put X beside Honors Earth/Environmental Science • If you are currently in Math I, put an X besides Biology Honors instead

  8. Global Studies • No application this year • For more information- Contact Katie Willett at Independence • Put a check by Global Studies in box on front top left of card • Required courses: • English • Freshman Seminar • Math • Social Studies • Science • Foreign Language

  9. Academy of Engineering • Apply online at www.tinyurl.com/IHSAOEapplication • Required courses: • English • Math • Social Studies • Science • PLTW Engineering • Recommended: Drafting 1

  10. Health and PE • Every student will take Healthful Living/Principles of PE as a Freshman • You may sign up for Health & PE either as a block schedule or as an A/B class. If you sign up for A/B class, you MUST pick a second A/B day elective…it must have a pair!!

  11. ELECTIVES • Now, count your number of Xs on the front of your card. Subtract that number from 8. This is the number of electives you have left to choose. • Ex 1: If you have a total of 7 Xs you have one elective class to choose • You can ONLY choose one Block elective • Do Not choose any A/B day electives • Ex 2: If you have a total of 6 Xs you have two elective classes to choose • You can choose 2 Block electives OR 2 A/B classes • Ex 3: If you have a total of 5 Xs you have three elective classes to choose • You can choose 3 Block electives • OR • You can choose 1 Block elective and 2 A/B electives

Electives Continued • Elective choices are NOT guaranteed! • Marching Band meets after school, get an application from Mr. Lail • JROTC does require you to wear a uniform and has other appearance requirements • If you are currently in Spanish I, you should sign up for Spanish II. Everyone else interested in a foreign language should choose level I of that language UNLESS you are fluent in Spanish and then you can choose “Spanish I for Native Speakers.”

  13. CTE Clusters If you are interested in any of the following careers it’s a great idea to select the attached course to begin a pathway You will take classes each year of school associated with your chosen career cluster. *= Offers Certification Upon Completion of Pathway

  14. AP Classes • AP courses are extremely rigorous, college-level courses • Must be highly motivated and self-disciplined • Most wait until at least sophomore or junior year • 3 options- AP Computer Science Principles, AP Human Geography, AP World History

  15. alternates • Elective choices are NOT guaranteed!! • You must choose three alternates courses. • Write the course names in the Alternate Courses box. • There is a good chance you could end up with one of your alternates so only choose classes you are interested in taking.

  16. Now count!! • Count your class periods (Xs) • Remember! • Foundations of English/Eng I counts as 2 periods • Foundations of NC Math I/CC Math I counts as 2 periods • You should have 8 Xs total!!! • You should also have 3 alternates written in the “Alternates” box.

  17. Online Card Registration • You must enter your courses from your registration card into PowerSchool with your parent/guardian • Enter the exact classes you chose on your card into PowerSchool- registration card and PowerSchool must match • If there is a discrepancy counselors will choose the class on the card • Do this before you turn in your card! • Follow the step-by-step directions on the handout or access the Independence Online Registration PowerPoint on the MHMS Counseling Website at mhmscounseling.weebly.com

Returning your card • Your card is due to your homeroom teacher by • Friday, March 1 • Make sure you review your card with your parent/guardian. • You and a parent/guardian must sign the bottom of the card before you turn it in. • If you do not turn in a completed card, Mrs. Brown will choose your classes for you.
