  1. Externships Orientation Bringing the World Into the Classroom

  2. Externships • Externships provide opportunities for current and retired community college and high school faculty, counselors, and career advisors to observe work underway in both business and industry sectors • Educators can see what practical skills, reasoning abilities, and leadership qualities are required in today’s job market • All this information will be brought back to the classroom to help students connect to the “real world”

  3. Externship Requirements • Educators interested in an externship should identify a business/industry site to visit that relates to one of the following Career Pathways: • Agriculture/ Natural Resources • Culinary/ Recreation Services • Entrepreneurship: Business/Finance • Medical: Health/Nursing • Additional Pathways will be the focus of future CTE grant work, so if you have a particular interest let us know!

  4. On-Site Visits • Once an externship has been approved, and the extern has reviewed the required documents in the Externship Packet, 10-20 hours of site visit time must be completed • The 10-20 hours can be at one business/industry site, or two or more sites as long as they correlate to the same Pathway

  5. Pathway Team Meeting • The extern will also attend one Pathway Team meeting during the summer • Extern will present information to the team regarding a completed site visit, or discuss an anticipated site visit • The team and extern will discuss possible student activities linked to the externship and possibilities for future externships within the Pathway

  6. Back to School • After synthesizing information gathered from the site visits and Pathway Team meeting, the extern will develop curriculum for students related to career exploration within the Pathway • Curriculum can be for an in-class activity, workshop, career fair, year-long program, or a summer program • Remember, you can bring this curriculum directly to students and/or you can present it to Pathway Team members at meetings throughout the school year • For examples of previous externship activities and presentations check out: http://ctetoolbox.com/pages.aspx?nav=51&page=130

  7. Evaluation • The final step is completing and turning in all required documents in the Externship Packet • Then you can receive your stipend and many thanks for participating in an activity that educates both teachers and students!!
