Don’t have to be a master of major types of research ! Ivan Rismi Polontalo, M.Ed.Stud
2 Types of Action research • Practical action research – to address a specific problem within a classroom, school, or other community. It can be in educational, social services, or business locations. • Participatory action research – to empower individuals and groups; to improve their lives and to bring about social change at some level. It can be in school, community, or society. Ivan Rismi Polontalo, M.Ed.Stud
Similarities and differences between action research and formal research • Systematic inquiry • Goal is to solve problems of local concern • Little formal training required to conduct such studies • Intent is to identify and correct problems of local concern • Systematic inquiry • Goal is to develop and test theories and to produce knowledge generalizable to wide position • Considerable training required to conduct such studies • Intent is to investigate larger issues Ivan Rismi Polontalo, M.Ed.Stud
Continued…… • Carried out by teacher or the local education professional • Uses primarily teacher-developed instruments. • Less rigorous • Usually value-based • Purposive samples selected • Selective opinions of researchers often considered as data • Generalizability is very limited • Carried out by researcher who is not usually involved in local situation • Uses primarily professionally developed instruments • More rigorous • Frequently value-neutral • Random samples (if possible) preferred • Selective opinions of researcher never considered as data • Generalizability of ten appropriate. Ivan Rismi Polontalo, M.Ed.Stud
Advantages • Can be done by almost any professional, in any type of school, at any grade level, to investigate just about any kind of problem. • Can improve educational practice. • When teachers or other professionals design and carry out their own action research, they can develop more effective ways to practice their craft. • Can help teachers identify problems and issues systematically. • Can build up a small community or research-oriented individuals within the school itself. Steps in Action research Ivan Rismi Polontalo, M.Ed.Stud
A Basic Action Research Routine Look Think Act • Gather relevant information (gather data) • Build a picture; describe the situation (Define and describe) • Explore and analyze. What is happening here? (Analyze) • Interpret and explain; How/why are the things as they are? (Theorize) • Plan (report) • Implement • evaluate Ivan Rismi Polontalo, M.Ed.Stud
