  3. Disease • An abnormal condition or change (other than injury), that interferes with normal body functioning causing physical, mental, and/or social problems

  4. Types • Non-Communicable: non-contagious • Heredity/Genetics • Environmental Factors • Lifestyle Factors • Communicable: Infectious (contagious); can be passed from one source to another • Pathogens

  5. Pathogens • AKA—GERMS! • Harmful micro-organisms that cause disease • Disease results ONLY when the growth of a pathogen begins to injure the cells and tissues of an infected person

  6. Pathogens Strep, E.Coli, Pneumonia Antibiotics Bacteria Rest, Liquids, Good diet Cold, Mono, flu Virus Athlete’s foot, ringworm Fungus Topical cremes Surgery, Medications Protozoa Tapeworm

  8. Ways Pathogens Spread • Direct contact • Droplets (airborne) • Contaminated surfaces • Contaminated food or water • Animals/insects

  9. Properties of a Virus • How easily it spreads • Fast or slow? • Durability • How long can it live outside the body? • How quickly it kills • How fast does it attack cells? • How much it mutates • How frequently does it change?

  10. So, worst possible type… • Spreads easily • Very durable • Kills slowly • Constantly mutates
