  4. IDENTIFICATION & PARTS OF EXTINGUISHER Fire Extinguisher: A fire extinguisher is a portable device specially designed to put out small fires. 3 Common types of portable fire extinguishers : 1. Water 2. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) 3. Dry Chemical Powder

  5. Water Fire Extinguisher Suitable for:Class A fires only

  11. Method of Operation • Carry the extinguisher to the site of fire • Pull out the safety pin • Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire • Squeeze the grip lever firmly • Aim at the base of the fire in a sweeping motion • Sweep from side to side

Safety Precautions Do not use water extinguishers for Class B (flammable liquids and gases) and Class C (energised electrical fires) Keep a safe distance Do not stand facing the wind direction Stay out of thick smoke areas For electrical fire, remember to switch for power supply if possible Do NOT Hold the Discharge Tube when operating the CO2 Fire Extinguisher as it might lead to frostbite

  13. HOSE REEL SYSTEM

HOSE REEL ADVANTAGES: Minimise manpower One-man operated User friendly Minimal back pressure Suitable for use by most people Easy to operate/ be deployed Mobility Non-Kinking reinforced rubber about 30m long. Hose extends from 15m to 30m Strength 9m throw ( water dispenses to distance of 9m) Achievable at a flow rate of 0.4 litre/seceof 0.4 liters/sec.

  15. HOSE REEL It is important to assess the type and source of fire before using a Hose reel to put out the fire! Suitable for:Class A fires only

  16. Checking of the Hose Reel Check that there are no obstructions preventing the use of the Hose Reel. Check that the key to unlock the Hose Reel cabinet is housed on the cabinet.

  18. 1. Break glass covering to retrieve key 2. Unlock the cabinet door 3. Check that Hose Reel is intact and not tangled

  19. 4. TurnON the valve to let the water flow (anti - clockwise direction )

  20. 5. Pull out the drum towards you The Drum can swivel left to right

  21. 6. Point the nozzle down and away

  22. 7. Turn the nozzle clockwise to test if the hose is working

  23. NOTE Always point Nozzle down and away from you Turn the nozzle carefully to control the amount of water gushing out

  24. 8. Assistant to unwind the drum to extend the hose

  25. Take Note!!! Hose controller and assistant must cooperate

  26. Assistant must follow hose trail and ensure Hose is straightened

  27. Assistant must keep hose reel in line of sight at all times

  28. 9. Assistant must keep Hose Controller within his view / line of sight

  29. 10. Hand ready to twist nozzle to turn on hose reel Note: Hose controller must keep low when approaching Fire

  30. Point to Note: Hose Reel handler and assistant must not be standing on the same side of the hose. They should be on oppositesides of the hose.

  31. Point to Note: Ensure the hose is not kinked!

  32. Keeping the Hose Reel

  33. 1. When keeping the hose, ensure it is not entangled

  34. 2. Assistant will help to reel the hose into the drum Note: make sure the hose does not get entangled

  35. Straighten the water Hose Assist in rolling up of the water Hose Assist in rolling up of the water Hose Ensure Hose is reeled in neatly.

  36. 4. Push hose reel drum into cabinet

  37. 5. Remember to shut off water supply.

  38. 6. Close cabinet door

  39. 7. Lock the cabinet and mount the key back on the key holder

  40. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS • Ensure that water supply is available before pulling out the hose reel towards the fire. • Keep your position low whilst fighting fire in an enclosed area. • In open areas, check for wind direction before moving towards the fire with the hose reel. Move in an upwind direction to avoid smoke and heat.

  41. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS • In cases where you are trapped in a smoke logged situation, use the hose reel as a guideline to lead you out from hazard area. • Use the hose reel to extinguish solid combustible materials only. • Do not use the hose reel to extinguish Class B (flammable liquids/gases) or C (energised electrical equipment) fires.

  42. CONCLUSION By applying correct methods of extinguishing fire with proper firefighting equipment, you can save lives and properties
