Who is at greater risk? • Adults who have fewer qualifications • Women living in areas of deprivation • Some minority ethnic groups, in particular those of South Asian origin • Adults and children with disabilities • Adults with limiting long term conditions • Young people and adults with poor mental health • Children and young people living in areas of deprivation

Causes of obesity Psychological drive for particular foods and consumption patterns, or physical activity patterns/preferences Influence of the media, education, peers or culture Influence of the environment on an individual’s activity behaviour Influence of the food environment on an individual’s food choices Type, frequency and intensity of activities Quality, quantity and frequency Genetics and ill health

What could the VCS organisations do? • Improve awareness amongst communities of the health risks • 47% of respondents with a BMI >30 said they thought they were healthy • Increase referrals to weight loss support services • 76% of all respondents wanted to lose weight • Provide support to improve confidence and self-esteem • Appearance (42%) and improve mood (33%) main reason triggers • Provide brief advice on lifestyle changes to improve diet and/or increase activity • 70% respondents didn’t use a service to lose weight • Provide longer term support for people who have accessed weight loss service • 55% have gained weight since losing weight • Improve recognition of obesity in children amongst parents • 32% of respondents with BMI >30 disagreed with the result
