  2. What we did so far... Year 3 students: Waste and Recycling Project „We feed the world“ Creative Footprints Exhibition „Globalisation“ Year 4 students: Project work in various subjects Excursion to WELIOS Science Center Presentations Fair Trade Breakfast

  3. Our Comenius - Wall To keep everybody informed about what's going on in the project, we installed a „Comenius-Wall“

  4. Presenting our Partner Countries Pupils of our year 4 classes collected information on the partner countries and presented the results in class. Northern Ireland

  6. How we found our team... Many of the pupils at HIT Grein are interested in the project and want to join a meeting. So it wasn't easy to choose those who should represent our school. Finally four students qualified for the meeting in Sweden.

  8. Globalisation and Sustainability Especially in Geography some classes worked on sustainability and globalisation.

  9. Globalisation Exhibition One main part was the exhibition provided by an Austrian NGO which was at our school for two weeks.

  10. Where and how things are produced The exhibiton contained many interesting facts and tried to show better alternatives.

The History of Globalisation Here are some facts the students of class 4c found out in their history lessons: • 1751 – 1880: industrial production began, invention of steam • engines, railways and telegraphs • 1880 – 1914: time zones were installed, clocks and watches • became common, steamships, cars, tramways and • busses became popular • 1914 – 1945: „Fordism“, radio and film business • 1945 – 1970: cars became mass products, TV and movies gained more importance, advertising • 1970 – present days: communication and data processing • technologies, modern electronic media

  14. How much waste ? The two classes of year 3 started a project on waste and recycling. After a waste collection at our school their work is still in progress and will be presented at the next meeting.

  16. Sustainable Energy Energy was a main topic in the physics lessons of the year 4 students. In groups they worked on a certain topic and presented and discussed it in class.

  26. Biomass as a renewable Source of Energy Presentation by Johanna and Marlene What can be used? • wood and wood products • straw and grass • plant oil • plants containing sugar or starch • organic waste (manure, compost,..)

  27. How does it work? Using biomass to fuel a thermal power station is only one possibilty. Biomass can be used in many ways for heating and producing energy. During the resent years efficient biomass power stations were built in Austria. Among them Europe's largest power-plant of that kind in Simmering, near Vienna,which was opened in the year 2006.

  28. Solar Energy The number of photovoltaic systems installed in our country has increased in the last years.

  30. Geothermal Energy Currently there are two geothermal power stations in Austria, both of them were built in 1998. There are ten other stations used for district heating only. Many households use heat pumps and there are lots of thermal baths all over the country.

  33. How to save Energy? Here are some simple ideas which can help you to reduce your energy consumption: • Turn down the heating (about 20° C in a room is enough) • Use energy saving bulbs instead of ordinary light bulb • Unplug electrical appliances when you are not using them • Recycle your waste • Buy and use energy-efficient electrical appliances • Clever cooking: For example, don't heat too much water • Walk, go by bike or use public transport whenever possible by Marietta and Tanja

  34. Does it really work? Some of the kids didn't only make presentations but also constructed models of power stations using things they had at home or at school.

  38. Some Impressions In the rest of the presentation you can see some impressions of our project activities and some ideas of our work in progress. The song you'll hear is by Hubert von Goisern - a well known Austrian folk-rock singer who is also quite popular among young people. The song is called „Brenna tuats guat“ - it deals with the problems of globalisation in a humorous way and was number one in the Austrian charts for many weeks.
