STORING and SHARING • What’s it worth? • Although the sheer proliferation of photos courtesy of mobile phones and digital cameras may have devalued them in some respects, it’s still impossible to put a price on personal photo collections. • The arrival of digital cameras generating photos as digital files has meant a move away from storage in plush leather-bound photo albums to computer hard drives, online storage and photo sharing. • One advantage of this is that the same digital file can be stored in various places at the same time (at no extra cost).
STORING and SHARING • But ... how safe are your digital photos? • Accidents will happen … • … fire, flood, theft … • … and your hard drive will ‘bite the dust’ one day. • Digital photos are a wonderful invention, but … • … they can be lost in an instant … • … so be serious about your storage and have multiple back-ups. • Save your files in a range of locations including your home computer’s hard drive, a back-up drive and online cloud storage.
STORING and SHARING • Hard drive and disk storage • The perfect starting point for storage. • However, photos can consume a lot of disk space so check your machine has the necessary capacity. • But, one hard drive is not safe enough. A decent external hard drive with one terabyte of space will cost around £90-£100. (Enough space to save up to 400,000 photos.) • Have a regular back-up routine or built in system. On Macs this comes as ‘Time Machine’; PCs have a back-up application within Control Panel. (Drive-to-drive syncing.) • Also, back-up to CDs or DVDs. Recommendation is that CD-R discs are the most secure in terms of long term storage. However, they are only 700Mb. Photo-DVDs can be bought - use DVD+R.
STORING and SHARING In the cloud - Online storage As well as back-up services, you can upload your pictures to many different cloud-based photo sharing and storage sites. • Examples include: • Flickr (Yahoo) • Free option restricts you to uploading 300MB of photos per month. • The ‘Pro’ service removes the restrictions and costs $24.95 (around • £16) per year. Largest photo sharing site. • Picasa (Google+) • Some free space (1Gb) and additional storage space can be bought. • Windows Live Sky Drive • A free service from Microsoft for users of the Windows operating • system offering 7Gb of storage space. (Also now for Mac).
STORING and SHARING • In the cloud - Online storage • Examples include: • Dropbox • Very widely used for all kinds of online file storage and sharing. • 2Gb free, but you can earn more free space by having friends join. • iCloud (Mac) • Some free space (5Gb) and additional storage space can be bought. • Amazon Cloud Drive • Also has 5Gb free space which it says is the equivalent of 2000 • photos. (Additional space is available at £6 upwards.) • Need to install a desktop app.
STORING and SHARING • Good ‘old fashioned’ prints • Inks used in digital printers are improving ... • ... but prints do seem to fade. • Cost can be an issue - especially at very high quality. • With large numbers to print use a commercial processor (in store or on-line). Your choice - Boots, Jessops, PhotoBox ... will depend on your preference as to look of prints.
Printing • Albums • High street stores or on-line. • Recommended on line suppliers are ... • Blurb http://www.blurb.co.uk • Albelli http://www.albelli.co.uk • Canvas • High street stores or on-line. • The Original Canvas Company http://www.originalcanvascompany.co.uk • is a good on-line supplier. STORING and SHARING
Printing • Acrylic • High street stores or on-line. • The quality appears to be very similar from both, • so as with prints it is a matter of personal choice. • Novelty prints - really sharing rather than storing • Mugs, jigsaws, posters, t-shirts ... anything you can print on! • Have a look at www.photoimageart.co.uk for ideas you • probably wouldn’t come up with in a month of Sundays!
