Clothing • Please dress your child in layers! • When it is warm outside, it’s VERY warm inside • When it is cold outside, it’s still VERY warm inside • Please send appropriate outerwear during the winter months, students will almost always go outside for recess until it’s below freezing • Please send in appropriate shoes, especially on gym days, if there is inclement weather outside
Snack/Lunch • We will be having a daily morning snack. Please send in a small HEALTHY snack for your child to eat. This will be a working snack • The kitchen encourages you to purchase lunch cards for your child rather than sending money in each time they want to buy lunch • If money is sent in, please put it in an envelope or wallet • On 1:00 days there is NO LUNCH but we do have snack
Bathrooms • Please make sure your child uses the bathroom before coming to school • It has been an issue so far this year with constantly needing to use the bathroom • Please let me know if your child has specific concerns that I should be aware of
Scholastic Book Order • Book orders will be sent home once a month • If you would like to order, please send a CHECK or you can order online with the access code that is on the front of the brochure
Special Dates • Field trip to the Library to receive library cards in October • Gingerbread Houses – parents are invited to help the children – usually early December • Mother’s Day Tea is the Friday before Mother’s Day ( May 8th) • Class trip is usually in late May or early June • Most likely will be a play or museum trip
Behavior System • SOAR (safety, on task, act responsible, respect) • Clothespin chart • More positive reinforcement • Earn jewels on clothespins • When reach 5 clothespin gets moved to Mrs. Greiss’s Greats!
Balanced Literacy • Responsible for 150 sight words by the end of 1st grade • Reading at home every night for 20 nights is a MUST! • Practice storytelling at home using every day events • Readers’ Workshop • Writers’ Workshop • Word Study • Interactive Read Aloud/Writing • Shared Reading/Writing
Math • Our curriculum is based on the common core • Common Core has a focus on fluency in numbers through 10 (addition/subtraction) • Other areas that will be addressed are measurement, shapes and addition/subtraction through 20
Homework • Handwriting • Strengthen fine motor skills • Practice, practice, practice • Posture • Math • A math page will be sent home almost every night • Reading • Contract will be sent home soon regarding reading homework • Still assessing where students are in their reading levels • Spelling • Choice board will be sent home with weekly spelling words • Complete work each night and return
Birthdays/Allergies • Birthday treats are welcome • We are a nut free classroom, so please be conscientious when buying/making treats for the class • Summer birthdays can be celebrated during the last few weeks of school
