  1. Particle Physics Through Cosmology Katrina Brown, Todd Brown, Ted Zaleskiewicz University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bob Reiland Shadyside Academy Cherie Harper Greensburg-Salem High School

  2. cpepweb.org The History and Fate of the Universe

  3. Universe Adventure • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Physics Division • www.universeadventure.org

  4. Quark-gluon plasma • 10-12s after Big Bang, a soup of quarks, gluons, and leptons. • Matter-Antimatter pair production and annihilation.

  5. Quarks Come Together: 10-4 Seconds After the Big Bang • Eventually cools enough for composite particles to form from quarks.

  6. Continuing Expansion… • Atomic nuclei form 102 seconds after the Big Bang (electromagnetic vs strong interactions). • Atoms form 4x105yrs after the Big Bang.

  7. Dark Matter • Neutral atoms formed - the photons, no longer scattered by free electrons, decoupled. • These photons have been redshifted and are the 3K CMB radiation now observed. • Dark matter seeding

  8. History and Fate of the Universe • An expanding universe • Speed up, slow down or reverse? Depends on the amount of matter and energy. • Accelerating! • Dark energy
