  2. Weight and Mass Weight and mass are not the same. Mass is the amount of matter in an object. This will have the same value anywhere in the Universe including space. Weight is a force and it is caused by the pull of gravity. In fact, weight is the pull of gravity acting on a mass.

  3. Mass = 10kg 10kg Weight = 100 N Mass and weight What is the difference between mass and weight? Your mass is a measure of how many particles there are in your body. It does not matter where you are in the Universe, your mass does not change. Your weight is a measure of the pull of gravity on your body. Your weight depends upon what planet you are standing on. You would weigh less on Mercury than on Earth because Mercury is smaller than Earth. What is mass measured in? Kilograms What is weight measured in? Newtons

  4. Weight and Mass So, a scientist should NEVER say “He weighs 50kgs” but, should say “He has a mass of 50kgs”, or the scientist could say: “the gravitational force acting on his mass is about 500 Newtons”. This is the same as saying: “his weight is about 500 Newtons”.

  7. Inertia • Mass and inertia are two words for the same thing. • The larger inertia (i.e. mass) of an object the more difficult it is to speed up, slow down or change direction. • Inertia = Force/ Acceleration
