  1. The Truth About Australian Pet Food

  2. 63% of Australian Households Have a Cat or Dog. The RSPCA statistics say that about 63% of Australian households have a cat or a dog. The dog is the most popular, with 19 dogs for every 100 people and 15 cats for every 100 people. If you are one of the lucky owners of a cat or dog here in Australia, have you ever stopped to think about what is in the pet food you buy? If you do stop to read the label, you may see a little-known ingredient by the name of ‘sulphite’ or hidden under ‘preservative code 220 to 228.’

  3. So much of our pet food on the supermarket shelf and even our local pet store has high amounts of preservatives added to give it a longer shelf life. While preservatives in small quantities are not particularly harmful, studies have shown that in many processed pet foods these levels are much higher. Sulphite preservative induced Thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency has been frequently recognised by the Australian Veterinary profession.

  4. Consistently feeding your pet a diet containing sulphite preservatives may cause severe neurological symptoms and can be fatal. The other commonly used preservative in Australian pet food is Sodium benzoate (E211) this preservative used in a range of pet food products can be toxic to cats. While the statistics can be quite alarming, the great news is that there is a better option for your beloved pet.

  5. Preservative free food for your cat or dog is easily available. At Raw and Natural Pet Supplies, we provide not just natural and preservative free food, but vitamin enriched pet food with ingredients that promote healthy digestion and nutrition in your furry friend. Using the highest quality whole foods infused with vegetables and superfoods, this grain free alternative gives your pet the best diet that you can trust. For a pet owner, this is great news!

  6. When you next visit your pet food store ask them which of their products are preservative free and always read the labels of pet food rolls, pet meats/minces and dry foods. You may get a big surprise. Look for a pet food store that source their pet meats and minces from human grade suppliers this will lessen the risk of feeding your best friend any of these harmful preservatives.

  7. Or even easier still, visit our online store at Raw and Natural Pet Supplies for a stress-free order with daily deliveries available. And of course, if you are concerned about your pet’s health please consult a veterinarian practitioner.
