INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS UPM with the MAIN TWO PROGRAMMES •ERASMUS .354 European Institutions .936 Bilateral Agreements .around 1,300 exchange students in total in 2007/2008 .52 teachers involved • MAGALHÃES/SMILE (similar to Erasmus Program) . UPM is the promoter of this programme between Europe & Latin America and the Caribbean . 40 exchange UPM students in 2008/2009

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS UPM with the ERASMUS PROGRAMME UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT EXCHANGE • The options available are: • Diploma Projects • One Semester • One Academic Year • Double Degree • Company Placements • Erasmus grant is made up of: • € 160 from Erasmus Agency • € 190 from “Ministerio E. C.” • € 100 from UPM • Note : • Students will be able to receive other grants from several public Entities or Banks. • FIGURES : • AROUND 1,300 STUDENTS PARTICIPATING ANNUALLY • 84 DOUBLE DEGREE AGREEMENTS

Erasmus Mundus Programme similar to the European "Fulbright Program" Top quality Masters courses (1 to 2 years duration) Courses are in a minimum of two European countries with different national language Started in 2004 Currently close to 100 Masters courses, UPM ranks first; participating in 7 EMMC Excellent scolarships for third country students Outside the European Union and candidate countries

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS UPM with OTHER PROGRAMS • • ATHENS • This network is made up of 16 European Technical Universities • A week of an intensive course in two “sessions”: March and November • 30 hours of lessonsto get 2 or 3 credits • 373 UPM students abroad • 501 foreign students participating at UPM • VULCANUS • Mobility program of student exchange between European and Japanese businesses by offering the opportunity to host a student as a trainee for 8 months • €15,000 scholarships including a Japanese course • 2 students from UPM enjoyed VULCANUS scholarships in 2007-2008 • GE4 • Mobility program of exchange students between USA (AE3), Latin America (LAE3) and Asia (ASE3). • There are not scholarships available for this program but enrolment is free • 4 UPM students abroad in 2007-2008 • 2 foreign students at UPM in 2007-2008

WORKSHOP 2 International students • Responsibilty • Exchange students and Double Degree students are managed from every Center International Office (Vice - Dean of International Affairs) in all aspects, from the application procedure to the sending of the transcript of records to the partner institutions. • Degree students (national and international) are managed from the Vice - Rector of Students

  15. WORKSHOP 2 International students • Access • International students access by bilateral agreement and the duration of the studies is 6, 9 or 12 month. • In case of double degrees, the duration is 2 years. • Degree students have to go through a selectivity exam, the same as national students.

  16. WORKSHOP 2 Integration of international student services • In most centers they are integrated • In others, they make differences depending whether they are exchange students or double degree (International Affairs), and degree students (Student Affairs).

  17. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS WELCOMING SERVICES • UPM has a link to help our incoming students: searching for accommodation and other services such as Visas, resident cards, travel insurance.... www.upm.es/rinternacional/housing/housing.html • “Health Insurance” using the European Health Card from its own country it will be able to access Spanish Social Security during its stay in Spain.

WORKSHOP 2 Good practices. • Mentor Project, where local students from the last years help incoming students in different aspects like social integration, administrative tasks solving, etc. • Promoting teaching in English. • To increase the number of exchanges. • To increase the number of destinies offered.

  20. WORKSHOP 2 Challenges • One of the unsolved challenge, right now, is the existence of a service that helps with the housing. • Although, UPM has a services for this purpose, the special case of Madrid make this task very difficult for a public institution like UPM.

  21. WORKSHOP 2 Challenges • Another challenge would be the integration of foreign students with local, and to avoid the typical groups by countries. • That is complicated, we do it through mentor students and all together activities, like trips, cineforum, sports etc.

  22. WORKSHOP 2 Student recruitment and marketing • Every School has an office or Vice Dean of International Affairs • UPM - Director and Vice Deans of International Affairs in case of Exchange and Double Degree students. • UPM - Director and Vice – Deans of Students in case of degree students. • Some Schools have a Department for Communication Media that helps both the Director for Student Recruitment and the Director of international Relations.
