Objective “Design and build an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) capable of performing realistic autonomous missions in an aviation environment”
Competition Requirements • Journal paper of no more than 20 pages (20%) • Static Judging (20%) • Safety • Failsafe demonstration • Craftsmanship • Oral presentation • Mission performance (60%)
Mission Requirements • Autonomous or manual takeoff • Autonomously navigate through specified waypoints (if manual takeoff, demonstrate transition to autonomous flight) • Dynamic re-tasking of aircraft during flight • Provide imagery, total number of targets, GPS coordinates, and target orientation • Autonomous or manual landing within a specified area
Mission Restrictions • Ceiling: 500ft AGL • Floor: 50ft AGL • No-fly zones: TBA • Max Weight: 55lbs • Max Mission Time: 40min
Overall Concept • Takeoff will be autonomous • Cruise altitude will be approx. 200ft AGL • Airframe and systems total weight will be approx. 30lbs • Autonomous flight will be controlled via Micropilot 2028g • Digital still and video cameras will be used for image capture of targets • Image processing will be performed using Labview Image Acquisition (IMAQ) • A drag chute will be incorporated to minimize landing distance
