  2. Global Manual on Influenza Surveillance • Method • Using already existing guidelines as framework • Draft by WHO HQ/GIP • Feedback from stakeholders • Manual will give a minimum standard

  3. Process and timeline • Evaluated by the WHO Guideline Review Committee in May 2010 • First draft to be circulated July 2010 • WHO Regional Offices • GlP WHO HQ • Epi-network • Second draft autumn 2010 • To be discussed on November 2010 meeting • Final draft end of 2010 • Printing March 2010

Global manual – why? • No global or inter-regional recommendations/guidelines exist • Regional guidelines/drafts exists but vary in how elaborate they are • The pandemic highlighted the need for standardized epidemiological data • Help for revisions and production of regional and national surveillance guidelines

  5. Global manual – to provide: • A common platform for information on how to systematically collect and to analyze data on influenza • A basic framework for future revisions/making of guidelines on influenza surveillance • An essential framework adaptable by countries including those with limited resources for influenza surveillance • A framework for a common system to ensure seasonal and pandemic surveillance

Content Standard case definitions: ILI and SARI for adults and children Sentinel site characteristics (minimum standard) and criteria for selection Data collection tools – minimum data set, data reports Use (and additional use) of data and possible action (baseline/thresholds)/ minimal data analysis/indicators recommended Laboratory specimen collection, storage, transport (WHO manual) Testing procedures/selection of patients to test Recommended reporting and feed-back mechanisms (FluID)
