  2. Subject • What is this passage about? The subject is the general topic, content, and ideas contained in the text. It should be stated in a few words or phrase.

  3. Occasion • What is the time and place of the piece? This is not the setting of the story. The occasion is the current situation that encouraged the writing to happen. What motivated the author to write this piece?

  4. Audience • The audience is the group of readers to whom the piece is directed. It may be one person, a small group, or a large group; it may be a certain person or a certain people. Authors don’t just write for the sake of writing—they have an audience in mind.

  5. Purpose • What is the author’s reason for writing the text? What reaction does he want from his/her audience? The purpose is extremely important. It is what helps us understand the argument or logic of the piece.

  6. Speaker • Who is the voice that is telling the story? The author and the speaker of a piece of literature are not necessarily the same person. The author chooses to tell the story from a specific point of view for a specific purpose. The method of narration and the character of the speaker may be crucial to an understanding of the work.

  7. Tone • What is the attitude of the author? Tone extends the meaning of the text beyond the literal (what the story is about). You will find the author’s tone in his or her diction (word choice), syntax (sentence structure), and imagery (vivid descriptions that appeal to the senses). • What mood does the tone evoke?
