  3. The Week(s) Ahead… • Monday: Oral reading and gender criticism beginning. • Tuesday: Writing conferences and silent reading. • Wednesday: Short essay on gender criticism due. Robert Burns. • Thursday: Robert Burns and oral reading. • Friday: Journal Entries (13 in total) are due. Finish the book! • Monday, September 23: Literary Criticism circles on The Catcher in the Rye. • Tuesday, September 24: The Multiple choice assessment on The Catcher in the Rye.

Gender Critical Perspective • Gender interpretation focuses on relationships between genders, including patterns of thought, behavior, and power in relations between and within the sexes. • For example, a gender reading of Cinderella may take into account the idea of power relationships between the men and women of the novel.

  7. BRAINSTORMING • Complete the Gender Criticism responses. • How is Holden’s relationship with one female character similar to another? How you would explain these similarities? • How does Holden’s relationship with one female character differ from another? How you would explain this difference? • How does age or attractiveness factor into how Holden treats this particular female character? • Does Holden use a “traditional gender role” when dealing with this particular female character? How does he, or how does he not? • What specific textual evidence can you use to support your analysis?

  8. HOMEWORK • Do the brainstorming and quotation hunting for your gender analysis. • Finish the book?

  9. Marxist Criticism Marxist criticism asserts that economics provides the foundation for all social, political, and ideological reality. Examining social groups and their influences is one of the most accessible ways to use Marxist criticism. (the Haves vs. Have-nots)
