  1. FIRST PRINCIPLES OF THE ORACLES OF GOD Thematic Studies In Bible Basics

  2. Lesson 6 Ù Biblical Authority (Part A) • Why Study Biblical Authority? • In some realms of life, it is not necessary to study (i.e. be concerned about) an “exclusive” claim of authority • Politics Ù competing parties, rules of government • Economics Ù different theories for different times • In such realms, alternatives are equal

  3. Lesson 6 Ù Biblical Authority (Part A) • Why Study Biblical Authority? • However, in religion, there is every reason to study, be concerned about authority • Man has no authoritative say cp. Mt 28:18 • This is the only realm that carries eternal consequences…it matters whether or not we are pleasing the Lord cp. Mt 7:21-23

  4. Lesson 6 Ù Biblical Authority (Part A) • Why Study Biblical Authority? • Anytime there has been a departure from the “pattern” God has decreed, sin has occurred • If what results from human efforts is not like the “pattern” revealed in the Scripture (God’s 1 book), it will not be pleasing to God…no matter what we might think about it cp. Heb 8:5

  5. Lesson 6 Ù Biblical Authority (Part A) • Why Study Biblical Authority? • This concept is especially important for young Christians to understand • Historically, every issue that has resulted in division among the Lord’s people has been due to a failure to understand, accept, & apply Biblical authority • To avoid repeating these errors from the past, we must study & teach for the future

  6. Lesson 6 Ù Biblical Authority (Part A) • The Importance Of Biblical Authority • Having a solid understanding on authority is important for 2 main reasons… • Knowing how to define, understand, and apply Biblical authority allows us to teach unbelievers, deal with brethren who want to take the church into apostasy

  7. Lesson 6 Ù Biblical Authority (Part A) • The Importance Of Biblical Authority • Having a solid understanding on authority is important for 2 main reasons… • Knowing how to define, understand, and apply Biblical authority allows the people of God to maintain their “distinctive separateness” in a world given over to sin, and to continue to serve God in the ways He has ordained

  8. Lesson 6 Ù Biblical Authority (Part A) • The Importance Of Biblical Authority • This “distinctive separateness” is in jeopardy as homes & churches continue to fail in their obligations to teach • Consider the disappointing survey results on page 22

  9. Lesson 6 Ù Biblical Authority (Part A) • The Need For Biblical Authority

  10. Illustrating The Need For Authority Ú What is the length of this line? The issue to be decided… The only right way to determine… consult the standard

  11. Lesson 6 Ù Biblical Authority (Part A) • The Need For Biblical Authority • Imagine a world without any authority • All sense of order would be lost…we would live in a world full of only chaos
