  2. Teaching Steps • 1. Arrange the students in pairs and ask them to discuss the questions. • 2. Bring the students’ attention to the language focus box and tell them that they can use the sentences and structures in their conversations.

  3. Part One Question for discussion • 1. Do you or your family keep pets? Why or why not? • 2. What animals or birds do you think are good as pets? • 3. What do people do with their pets when they are away from home? • 4. Have you ever heard of Dog Ma? Can you guess what Dog Ma stands for?

  4. 5. Do you worry about anything before going to a party? (e.g. what to wear? Who to go with?) • 6. What is small talk? • 7. If you see somebody you really fancy, what would you do?

  5. Language Focus • I’ve got a dog at home. It’s cuddly little thing and just like my friend. • I love my… for it never bothers me/ always listens and never answers back. • My … is / intelligent/ clever/ loyal/ reliable/ quick to sense my anger or sorrow. • I couldn’t help crying/ feeling really sad/ when me … went missing/ fell ill/ got hurt.

  6. Pets are good company, especially to lonely old people/ help people kill loneliness. • It’s relaxing watching tropical fish swimming in the tank. • Keeping pets costs time and money. I can’t afford either. • Once in a while/ Every month I go to the bank near our school either to deposit or withdraw money.

  7. I think it’s wise to put your money in a bank. It’s safer and your money also earns interest. • I have so little money that I don’t need the bank to take care of it. • I need to withdraw/ take out some money for my daily expenses next month.

  8. The clerks at our school bank are very helpful/ quite patient/ efficient/ very slow/ talk too much with each other… • It’s a good habit to save money on a regular basis. • Don’t look for large, short-term profits. They’re dangerous/ too risky.

  11. I’d like some traveler’s checks, please. • Would you please change these pounds for me? • Can you change me some money?
