  1. BASIC STEPS FOR CONTENT AUDIT CHECK

  2. On my recent post, I introduced content auditing. I discussed its definition, importance and the different phases. This article will elaborate on the five steps of content auditing. Quick recall! Site auditing is an essential part of search engine optimisation. There are two significant parts of site auditing: on-page and off-page. Content auditing is a part of on-page SEO auditing. It is as essential as technical auditing.

  3. WHAT ARE THE STEPS OF CONTENT AUDITING? According to Moz, there are five steps to audit content which are a part of the three phases: A. Inventory and audit phase Step 1: Crawling all indexable URLs Step 2: Gather additional metrics B. Analysis and recommendation phase Step 3: Put it into a worksheet Step 4: Work the content audit worksheet C. Summary and reporting phase Step 5: Write the report

  4. INVENTORY AND AUDIT PHASE This is the most time-consuming part of content auditing. Find and list every content produced and its additional metrics in a particular period. Step 1: Crawling all indexable URLs Get a full Screaming Frog crawl to start finding indexable content. Collect URLs from Google Analytics, Google Webmaster Tools, XML Sitemaps, and other possible sources of a list of indexable URLs from your site. Step 2: Gather additional metrics Use Screaming Frog and URL Profiler to gather the on-page metrics and data from the URL list

  5. ANALYSIS AND RECOMMENDATION PHASE This is the most tedious part of content auditing. Analyse the data and identify the action for each content. Step 3: Put it into a worksheet List down the URLs and additional metrics everything you need in a spreadsheet and get rid of the ones you don’t need. Look for any content-related issues that can cause penalties. Analyse the information to know what action is needed.

  6. Step 4: Work the content audit worksheet After cleaning up your spreadsheet, you will need five columns: URL, Title, Action, Details, and Page Type. URL – URL link Title – Page title Action – Choose among the following: Keep As-is, Improve, Remove, Consolidated, Prune, Fix Security Certificate Details – Additional information based on the recommended action Page Type – Where it belongs

  7. SUMMARY AND REPORTING PHASE This is the last phase of your content audit. Summarise the result in a cohesive table that identifies the quantity of each action along with the number of organic search traffic. Step 5: Write the report Create an executive summary that summarises the findings, recommendations and next actions from the audit.
