  1. Cause and Effect Comprehension Skill Fourth Grade Unit 2 Week 1 Created by Kristi Waltke

  2. Cause and Effect The cause is the girl swings the club. The effect is the ball moves. A cause is something that makes something else happen. It is why something happens. An effect is what happens.

  3. Cause and Effect • Clue words such asbecause, so, and cause sometimes signal a cause-effect relationship. • Sometimes you must figure out for yourself that one thing causesanother.

  4. Good readers ask themselves why things happen in a story. Asking why will help you figure out cause and effect! When you see the hippo in the pond, you can ask yourself why he got in there. He is probably in the water to cool off. This is cause and effect. The hippo was hot. He got in the water. Cause Effect

  5. When you see the kids picking up the trash on the beach, you can ask yourself why. You know that some people must have been messy at the beach before the kids got there. This is cause and effect. People left trash on the beach. The kids cleaned up the beach. Cause Effect

  6. Think about the story. Why do Joanna’s parents hang the rim up so high?

  7. Effect Cause so they hang the rim on the edge of their roof, 16 feet high! Joanna’s parents don’t know how high a rim is supposed to hang…

  8. Think about the story. Why do the boys think Joanna is a boy?

  9. Effect Cause so the boys think she is a boy too. Joanna is wearing a hat that hides her long hair and she says Jo is her name

  10. Think about the story. Why does Joanna not tell the boys that she is a girl?

  11. Effect Cause so she doesn’t tell them that she is a girl. Joanna wants to play ball with the boys and thinks they might not let her if they know

  12. Think about the story. Why does one of the boys say “unbelievable?”

  13. Effect Cause so he says “unbelievable.” Joanna jumps higher than he has ever seen anyone jump before

  14. Think about the story. Why does T.J. give Joanna a hard time during most of the story/

  15. Effect Cause so gives her a hard time and says that she fouled him. Joanna guards T.J. and blocks his shot which embarrasses him

  16. Think about the story. How do the boys figure out that Joanna is a girl?

  17. Effect Cause so the boys figure out that she is a girl. Joanna’s hat falls off while she is dunking the ball

  18. Think about the story. What is the effect of Joanna’s impressive ball play at the end of the story?

  19. Effect Cause so the boys give her the nickname Jumpin’ Jo and invite her to play again. Joanna plays a good game and shows the boys she can dunk the ball
