Background Claudius “expelled the Jews from Rome because they were constantly rioting at the instigation of Chrestus (believed to be a corruption of the Greek Christos)” - Suetonius : The Life of Claudius Act 18:1-2 After this Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. And he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome (probably around A. D. 49).

  12. Background The Jews would be returning to Rome by the time of this letter (A.D. 54). Rom 16:3-5a Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks but all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks as well. Greet also the church in their house.
