  3. 1980’sA Decade Of Smaller Government • President Reagan takes office in January of 1981. • Amid soaring budget deficits, the Reagan Administration commits to cutting the size of federal government.

  4. 1980’sNational Service Organizations • Campus Outreach Opportunity League (1984) • Campus Compact (1985) • National Association of Service and Conservation Corps (1985) • Youth Service America (1985)

  5. 1988-1990A Kinder And Gentler Nation President Bush comments that individuals serving their neighbors are like “a thousand points of light”

  6. 1991 - 1992A Call to Service During the Presidential campaign, Governor Bill Clinton visits a number of college campuses and urban communities and is intrigued by the National Service movement.

  7. September 1993 The Act President Clinton signs the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993, creating AmeriCorps and the Corporation for National Service.

  8. 1994 -1996 A National Movement Takes Root The first 20,000 AmeriCorps members serve.

  9. 1996Project TASC • Project TASC launched: • first CNCS grant to provide training and technical assistance specifically for state commissions awarded to Aguirre International • Project TASC was designed to provide organizational development to state commissions including strategic planning, commission retreats, and commissioner and staff development

  10. April 1997 The Presidents' Summit for America's Future A national summit of living Presidents is held in Philadelphia and chaired by General Colin Powell

  11. The Seeds Are Sown… • Group of committed EDs begin development of a new organization to be the national voice representing the interests of all commissions • Ford and Kaufman Foundations give grants to support development of the new national association of state commissions • January 1997 - Michigan Commission and Project TASC supported the first national event where commission chairs were invited to attend with their executive directors in New Orleans

  12. 1998 - 2000AASSC to ASC • May 1998: • First Director on board • 1999: • The American Association of State Service Commissions (AASSC) is chartered as a not-for-profit corporation in South Carolina • March 2000: • ASC granted 501 (c)(3) status • Summer 2000: • ASC offices moved to Washington, DC
