  2. What Is Worship • Three Greek words are translated to worship. • Each Greek word teaches us something about worship. • Specifically it helps us to distinguish three levels or dimensions of worship.

First Level of Worship to know who God is • Yare : fear, revere, see His greatness • "Therefore the Lord said: “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men, " (Isaiah 29:13, NKJV)

  4. Awareness • Sebomai - "‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ” (Matthew 15:8-9, NKJV)

  5. Awareness or Fear of God! Foundation of Worship

Fear or Awareness • "And Moses said to the people, “Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin.”" (Exodus 20:20, NKJV) • "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction." (Proverbs 1:7, NKJV)

  7. 2nd Level of Worship to accept what God does • Shachah – means to bow down or stoop down before. • "And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.”" (Genesis 22:5, NKJV)

  8. Accept What God Does • Proskuneo – to kiss the hand or to do obeisance – submissive spirit • "Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy. For all nations shall come and worship before You, For Your judgments have been manifested.”" (Revelation 15:4, NKJV) • Used 24 times in the book of Revelation.

  9. Accept What God Does! Awareness or Fear of God! Building on the Foundation

  10. 3rd Level of Worshipto do what God says • Abad – translated worship but often translated as serve, work or labor. Emphasis on worship as service. • "You shall fear the Lord your God and serve Him, and shall take oaths in His name." (Deuteronomy 6:13, NKJV)

"“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul," (Deuteronomy 10:12, NKJV) • "You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve Him, and to Him you shall hold fast, and take oaths in His name." (Deuteronomy 10:20, NKJV)

  12. Do What God Says • Latreuo – serve, work, labor, etc. • " I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service." (Romans 12:1, NKJV) • "how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?" (Hebrews 9:14, NKJV)

  13. Do What God Says • "Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship (proskuneo) the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve (latreuo)" (Matthew 4:10, NKJV) • Emphasis here is that worship is not only something done in the building, but it is a lifetime of serving God.
