  1. Tuesday, January 14th Bell Work: Please take out your Unit 1.3 SFI list from yesterday. You will have the first 15 minutes of class to finish identifying the terms on the list (due Wednesday).

  2. Drop Everything and Read! Please take out a book or magazine to read. As part of our Literacy Week initiative, we will be conducting 15 minutes of sustained, silent, independent reading. Be prepared to share something interesting that you read. If you would like to borrow a magazine or book, check the bookshelf by the windows. If you do not have your own book, ask yourself, “Why am I depriving myself of the chance to read something amazing?”

  3. Daily Agenda: • Bell Work: SFI List Identifications • Literacy Week Activity • WOD --> Resilient • Graphic Organizer: British Colonies • Newsletter Summarizer Essential Question: Were any of the American colonies a “Utopia?” What allowed them to succeed or caused them to fail in this goal? Homework: Read Chapter 3 and complete Guided Reading worksheet (due Thursday).

  4. Why might these people be described as resilient?

  5. Resilient- bouncing back from adversity or misfortune; recovering quicklyPronunciation What would RESILIENT mean to: A soldier: A student: Examples Jan. 14, Block 4

  6. Resilient- bouncing back from adversity or misfortune; recovering quickly Possible Answers will vary What would RESILIENT mean to: A soldier: After being wounded in combat, a soldier would have to dig deep within to find the courage and strength to over- come physical and emotional challenges. A student: Faced with failing grades on his/her midterm, a student would refocus his attention on academics and study hard to bring up those grades. Examples Jan 14, Block 4

  7. Essential Questions: Were any of the British American colonies a “utopia?” What allowed them to succeed or caused them to fail in this goal? What was the appeal of each colony and who would it appeal to?

  8. Colonial Research: Please log-on to your computer. You will need to use the internet to research each of the original British colonies in America. Complete the chart provided. After finishing the chart, go to the class wiki and access the “Handouts and Assignments” page. There you will find a link for your summarizing activity today (Colonial Regions Newsletter). Click the link, read the directions carefully, and begin your newsletter.

  9. Avoiding Generalizations: Were all British settlements the same? How did Jamestown and Plymouth Differ?

  10. The painting The First Thanksgiving 1621 is a useful resource for historians who wish to understand the relationship between the Wampanoag Indians and the Pilgrim settlers in 1621. Do you agree or disagree? The First Thanksgiving 1621by J. L. G. Ferris (1932).
