  3. George Bernard Shaw said – Those who can.. Do Those who can’t.. Teach.! Shaw was off the mark. Teaching today isn’t for - wimps, wannabees, or also- rans.

  4. Today's Teachers have to be- • Doers • Dreamers • Schemers • Helpers • Healers • Mentors • Role models • Nurturers and • Inspirations

  5. “The people of a country is enlarged replica of their teacher.” • “Every one knows that even the best curriculum and the most perfect syllabus remain dead unless quickened in to life by the right method of teaching and the right kind of teachers.” -Secondary Education Commission

  6. The traditional view of a teacher is- “some one who dispenses knowledge” But every day according to the situation the teacher wears many hats... • Friend • Counselor • Judge • Mentor • Facilitator • Manager & So on………

  8. Teacher as a MANAGER At different stages of teaching, Preteaching -> Teaching -> Post teaching IN PRE TEACHING PHASE The teacher- • Analyses the content • Decides Content for instruction Objectives Sequencing Methods of evaluation Here the teacher is DECISION MAKER & DESIGNER OF THE WAY

  9. IN TEACHING PHASE Teacher explains Gandhi ji’s Philosophy of non-violence in class V Teacher narrates the story. Students listen attentively and ask questions in between. Teacher quickly decides to narrate an episode from Gandhi ji’s life to illustrate philosophy Students – Passive listeners (Get Bored) Transitional Stage Teacher senses that students are disinterested

  10. IN POST TEACHING PHASE The teacher • Analyses results • Reflects on self • Understands students problems • Modifies teaching – learning process Here the teacher acts as a – designer of the next instructional system

  11. Teacher as a TEACHING AID The teacher can involve students more in class room discussion and activities if follow simple steps like- • Movement • Usage of body language • Eye contact • Gestures • Facial expressions • Speech • Student’s interaction • Names

  12. Teacher as a FACILITATOR In student centered methods- teacher guides students during- Project work, Experimentation, Library work & Home assignments. Here the teacher- • Provides resources • Monitor progress • Encourages students for problem solving. • The students – • Feel excited…. • Apply their knowledge to solve the problem….

Teacher as a DISCIPLINARIAN “Good noise means-learning Bad noise means- children are out of control No noise means-adults don’t understand the nature of children.” -Dr. Harlen Alternative solutions to a problem depends on • Age group of students • Physical fitness of students • General climate of the school etc.

Girl dies of Asthma in Delhi, parents blame school New Delhi, Apr 22: Aakriti Bhatia passed away due to an Asthma attack that could not get appropriate attention from her teachers who allegedly believed she was faking a fatal attack to bunk classes. Girl passes away after corporal punishment New Delhi, Apr 17: Shannoo Khan who could not recite alphabets died in the course of her teacher disciplining her by making her stand out in the summer sun after ramming her head onthe bench.

  16. Teacher as a COUNSELLOR “Every individual if guided properly, can realize the strengths of self to solve the problem of self.” If a student has a problem he/she approaches the teacher or the teacher senses the problem then- • The teacher establishes rapport with the student.

  17. Make him come out with the problem. • Help the student to move forward in solving the problem. Here the teacher should be- • Keen observer • Sensitive • Empathetic • Loving & friendly (to win the confidence of the student)

  18. Teacher as a CHARACTER BUILDER ‘’Watch your thoughts, they become words. Watch your words, they become actions. Watch your actions, they become habits. Watch your habits, they become character. Watch your character, it becomes your destiny’’. Main aim of teaching is character building.

  19. “Knowledge without character = incomplete education” • Teach students to respect people, “It is only respect which returns you respect.” • Teach students obedience, care, forgiveness, truthfulness, mannerism & etiquettes to lead the life of purity and sincerity. • Cater development of soul, mind and the body. • Aim at balanced growth of the total personality of a student.

  20. Teachers role in the SOCIETY “The teacher’s place in the society is of vital importance. He acts as the pivot for the transmission of intellectual skills from generation to generation and helps to keep the lamp of civilization burning.” -Dr. S. Radhakrishnan

  21. Students are deeply affected by teachers – • Love & affection • Character • Competence • Moral commitment They try to follow their teacher’s- • Manners • Costumes • Style of conversation • Getup

Teacher as a COLLEAGUE “Good teachers learn from each other” For the school to function smoothly- • All teachers should work in harmony • Help the other teachers(particularly beginners) • Don’t teach in vacuum • Find a way to connect with peers • Be a good listener, loving & consentious teacher.

  23. The Paradoxical Commandments- • People are illogical, unreasonable, self-centered. LOVE THEM ANYWAY • If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. DO GOOD ANYWAY

  24. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. DO GOOD ANYWAY • Honesty & frankness make you vulnerable. BE HONEST & FRANK ANYWAY • What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. BUILD ANYWAY

  25. The biggest people with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest people with smallest minds. THINK BIG ANYWAY • People favor underdogs but follow top dogs. FIGHT FOR A FEW UNDERDOGS ALWAYS

  26. People really need help but may attack if you do help them. HELP PEOPLE ANYWAY • Give the world the best you have or you will get kicked in the teeth. GIVE THE WORLD THE BEST YOU HAVE ANYWAY • If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies. • SUCCEED ANYWAY
