  4. Library Entrance • When you arrive on L1, the main floor of the Library, you are greeted by displays that highlight the Library’s collections.

  5. L1 Floor • The Gallagher Law Library has been designed as an open concept that takes advantage of natural light. • For more information about the Library facility and services, please visit our Quick Guide.

  6. Circulation • At the Circulation Desk, you can: • Check out materials from the Library • Receive a free library card and access permission for the Library’s computers and wireless network • Receive general information about the Library’s facilities, including maps. • The Circulation Desk can be reached at (206) 543-4086. • Further information on Circulation policies can be found here.

  8. Reference office • The Reference Office, located next to the Circulation Desk, is staffed by law librarians and law librarianship interns. • The librarians and interns assist patrons in finding and using tools to help patrons with their legal research questions. Please remember that librarians and interns CANNOT give legal advice. More information about our Reference Services can be found here. • Please visit the Library’s website for the Office’s hours and contact information.

  9. Reference Area • The Reference Area is located behind the Circulation Desk and Reference Office. • Books located in this area are recent editions with limited borrowing privileges. Please see our Circulation Policies for more information.

  10. Classified Stacks • The Classified Stacks are located behind the Reference Area and on the L2 floor. • These books can be checked out by all of the Library’s patrons. • For information about the Collection, please click here.

  11. Copy Alcoves • The Library provides a number of copy machines for its patrons. There are three copy alcoves: two on L1 and one on L2. • Patrons who are not UW students must purchase a Dawg Card to make copies. These cards may be purchased in the Library at a dispenser in one of the copy alcoves. (Please see the Circulation staff for directions to the dispenser.) The machine accepts exact change only.

  12. Student Study Spaces • At Gallagher, we provide study and work spaces all over the Library for our patrons.

  13. UW Law Student Study Spaces • Some areas of the Library are reserved exclusively for law students. These areas include: • Tables under the windows on L1 • The Law Student Lounge • Group study rooms on L2

  14. L2 Floor • The lower floor of the Library provides the best, most dramatic views of the Library’s distinctive skylights. • Besides the study space, this Floor contains some of our Classified Stacks and all of our Compact Stacks.

  15. Compact Stacks • Our Compact Stacks are electronically operated moveable stacks, holding approximately 60% of the Law Library's collection. • In these Stacks, you can find: • bound volumes of law reviews, • regional reporters, old state reporters, • treaty series, • older volumes of the Congressional Record & the Federal Register, and • court briefs.

  16. UW Law School Class Pictures • Across from the copy alcove on L2, the Library maintains pictures of the UW’s law school classes from 1902 to the present. • A collection of our LLM students are also located here.

  17. Legal Research Training Center (LRTC) • The LRTC is located on the lower floor of the Library in Rooms L201 and L202. It is equipped with 24 desktop computers and two trainer's stations. This facility is used for hands-on research training in scheduled sessions. • UW Law School faculty and staff may request training sessions by contacting the reference librarians at 3-6794.

  18. Behind the Scenes • Much of the work of the Library is done behind the scenes. The people in Technical Services work to keep our collection up-to-date.

  19. Book Drop • Patrons can return books even if the Library is not open. For the convenience of our patrons, the Library maintains two book drops outside of Gates Hall: • At the main entrance of Gates Hall, the northeast corner of the building near Memorial Way and • At the northwest corner of the building near 15th Ave. NE
