The Southern Colonies • New Colonies in the South • Main idea: England founded four more colonies in the South during the 1600s and early 1700s • Maryland • CeciliusCalver (Lord Baltimore) wanted to provide a refuge for Catholics • Toleration Act: first law in North America to promise that all Christians could worship freely

  5. The Southern Colonies • The Carolinas • King Charles II started this colony (late 1600s) • North:few harbors; not as good for farming • South: good farmland; many excellent harbors

The Southern Colonies • Georgia • King George II started this colony – (1732) – gave the land to James Oglethorpe • Oglethrope wanted the colony to be a place for poor people and debtors • He offered a free trip to Georgia and small farms of their own – to start a new life! • His rules: • No drinking alcohol • No owning slaves • Elect their own legislature
