Objectives The session should • induce a process of (self-)reflection • on health care workers attitudes towards HIV/AIDS and patients • institutional barriers to good HIV/AIDS care • personal behaviour, professional conduct, work ethics • fears , stigmatisation and discrimination at the workplace and in the own family • create an open atmosphere to discuss HIV related issues during this week’s seminar

  3. Structure of the Session • Introduction by facilitator • Forming and convening groups • Group work • Group presentations each • Plenary discussion

  4. Group Work • We will work in groups covering various aspects of the stated objective, later we will re-convene in a plenary session and get feed back on the group work. • We want to work here and back at our hospitals in mutual respect • We want to reflect our own experiences and fears with regard to care of HIV AIDS patients

  5. Topics - Group 1 Professional conduct and work ethics in the face of the HIV epidemic • High burden of work • Low numbers of staff • Low salaries • Work and sick relatives at home • And now extra work for ART?! • How can we cope?

  6. Topics –Group 2 • How does HIV AIDS affect myself at work? • Do I have fears when working with HIV AIDS patients ? What do I fear? Do these fears change my attitudes towards AIDS patients? • Do I have prejudices? Do I discriminate? • Imagine : How would I like to be treated if I was the patient?

  7. Topics – Group 3 • How do I cope with the threat of HIV? • When and how did I decide to go or not to go for VCT? • Would I dare to disclose my status within my family or at work? If not, why?

  8. Suggested Method • All groups • can use discussions, but role plays are encouraged e.g. about stigmatisation/discrimination experienced at the workplace • should discuss the barriers for open discussions at the workplace, for good HIV AIDS care • should address expectations for this course , technical, atmospherically, “How can the course assist in addressing the identified problems?”
