  2. General Information • AIDS = Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome • Hurts the immune system in humans by hurting ability to fight off disease

  3. Transmission? • Sexual Intercourse • Contaminated Blood by transfusion or needles • Mother -> Child via breastfeeding

  4. Symptoms • Inflamed throat • Muscle pains • Fatigue • Fever • Swollen lymph nodes

  5. How Did It Reach Humans? • Bushmeat vendors or handlers were bitten or cut while butchering animals. • Lead to the transfusion of blood or body fluids into individual

  6. History • First US report = 5 homosexual men in Los Angeles • First called GRID for “Gay Related Immune deficiency . • Renamed to “AIDS” when it appeared in Haitians and heroin users.

  7. Earliest Signs • Earliest signs were from Congo • Passed from chimps to humans • Several Theories of Spread

  8. Effect on Society • HIV and AIDS epidemic well over half a million people have died of AIDS in America the equivalent of the entire population of Las Vegas. • 1.2 million people living with HIV in the United States of America - fifth of these are unaware of their infection.

  10. Commonly effects… • Most commonly is a serious problem among Black Americans and, more recently, among the Hispanic/Latino population. • men who have sex with men represent about 2% of the total population but account for 57% of the people newly infected • increased about 17%in the 37 states

HIV testing and counseling are essential in expanding access to HIV prevention and treatment and ultimately achieving universal access. • HIV testing and counseling services has already increased steadily • the widespread increase in HIV testing and counseling availability helps the cause HIV prevention and treatment.
