  4. Kinds of Protections and Rights in Conflict • Civil Liberties are protections against government, freedoms and rights guaranteed to every citizen • Civil Rights generally refer to positive acts of government protection against group discrimination (often for minority groups)

  5. Tinker vs. Des Moines (1965) • In 1965, a groups of adults and students in Des Moines, Iowa, decided to publicize their opposition to the Vietnam War by wearing black armbands during the winter holiday season • The school administrators said that students wearing black armbands would be asked to remove them or face suspension • Students were suspended and the parents took the school to court, believing their rights had been violated

  6. Tinker vs. Des Moines (1965) • In the decision of Tinker v. Des Moines the courts sided with the students stating that the students' rights are not banned "at the schoolhouse gate"
