  2. Questions to be asked and answered • a. What are we seeking in our human actions? • b. How do we know what the purpose of something is? • c. What does the distinctive work of a thing show us? • d. What then is the purpose of man? • e. What helps me or hinders me to live as I should?

  3. What are we seeking in each of our actions? • Why do you want to play video games all day? • Why do you want to go play paintball? Why? • You are looking to satisfy some desire in you. You are looking for happiness. • If you are full do you desire to eat?

  4. What is the purpose of life? • 1. What is the purpose of an eye? • To see. • 2. What is the purpose of a pen? • To write. • 3. What is the purpose of man of human life? • - If everything has a purpose then it must be that man himself must have a purpose.

  5. How did you know what the purpose of an eye and pen were? • Distinctive work- Whatever it alone can do or at least better than anything else of its kind. • You knew what the purpose of an eye and pen were because you knew the distinctive work of them. • We know what the purpose of something is by its distinctive work

  6. Distinctive Work • - What is the distinctive work of the foot? • To walk. • What is the purpose of a foot? • To Walk.

  7. What is the distinctive work of a knife? • To cut • What is the purpose of the knife? • To cut.

  8. What is the distinctive work of a teacher? • To teach • What is the purpose of a teacher? • To teach.

  9. - What is the distinctive work of a builder? • To build • What is the purpose of a builder? • To build.

  10. What can we figure out from all these examples? • When something has a distinctive work, its purpose is to perform its distinctive work well • What happens if an eye only sees a little bit and is fuzzy? • Is it a good eye? • No, because it is not fulfilling its purpose.

What then is the purpose of man? • - To perform reasonable actions well and throughout his life. • - For example: • - A boy who gets tripped by another boy and then he turns and slams a book into his face. Is he acting reasonably? • No, he is letting his passions make the actions for him. Just like an animal.

  12. Purpose of Man • If man performs reasonable actions well throughout his life he will achieve what he is seeking; HAPPINESS.

  13. Living purpose, forming Habits • The actions one does leads to the formation of habits. When one does good things repeatedly, he forms good habits and becomes more like Christ.

  14. Forming habits, leads to freedom • The more one forms habits, the more one does what one ought to do. When one does what one ought to do, one lives freedom. • One lives the truth, and the truth sets one free.

If not Living with purpose… • Therefore, when something has a distinctive work, its purpose is to perform its distinctive work well, and throughout its life. • When I do not form habits that correspond to my purpose in life, I am not living according to the idea that God had for me in my life.

  16. God’s plan – my freedom • God wants me to be free, but that can only come about when I do what I believe, and not otherwise. • To do what I believe is to live the truth, and then I live as God designed me to be.

  17. Questions to be answered • What are the passions? • What are feelings?

  19. Let’s analyze the boat • The wind is like our passions. • Sometimes they help us push us to where we need to go and at other times they can hinder us.

  20. The Passions • The Passions are strong, natural tendencies that draw us toward or away from something.

  21. The Passions • Love- Yearning for union with a person or a thing. You always serve yourself first and make sure you are comfortable. You serve others first. • Hate- Eagerness to rid ourselves of what displeases us. You hate studying. You detest sin. • Aversion- Makes us run or repel. You do not like to make sacrifices. You see sin. • Joy- Satisfaction of present good. You take joy in watching a guy get beat up. You sacrifice your favorite candy. • Sadness- Makes us grieve over present evil. Your dog was killed. The sin committed by others • Courage- Makes us strive over a difficult good. Running to get the ball past the line. You are afraid to make the sign of cross in public. • Fear- Makes us shrink back from an evil. A guy waiting to beat us up. You fear offending God. • Despair- Arises when good that is loved seems impossible. You becoming a professional athlete. • Anger- Violently repels what hurts us, and incites the desire of revenge. A guy punches you in the face.

What happens if we were just let our ship just be taken by the wind • If we let our passions decide our actions? • It would be like a captain letting the wind blow him into the rocks. • We need to channel and harness our passions. Not just run to the refrigerator when we are feeling hungry. To direct ourselves to what we should love and give ourselves to. • Recall Willy Wonka

  23. What are feelings? • They are like the ocean current. • Personal, spontaneous, psychological reactions. • The current can help us or be harmful to us. • Sometimes it crosses our course and pulls the ship toward dangerous rocks. At other times it is right in line where we want to go.

  24. For example • “Christ told me to take the cross so I am going to listen to everything my parents say.” • Feel frustrated, I am going to make my parents life miserable. • I do not feel like being silent, I do not feel like cleaning my room.

What happens if the current is dragging the boats to the rocks? • The Captain goes against it. • We can’t control how we feel happy, sad, excited or down in the dumps. • Therefore, we must go against them at times. If a captain allows his sailing vessel to drift with the current, he is headed for eventual ship wreck.

  26. What type of boat are you navigating? • There are canoes, small sail boats, and larger crafts, such as schooners or large ocean liners. Some are sleek, lightweight and maneuverable, like a catamaran. Other are slow and steady, but durable.

  27. NAVIGATE TO STAY ON COURSE • Saying one thing and doing another is to direct your boat off course. Little by little, if nothing is done to correct it, it can lead to a tragedy.

  28. Trust Christ • Trust the Lord and what he has taught you through the Church, so as to stay on course and to be truly free!
