    2. China is a very old civilization. No one now knows when people first came to the country we call China.

    3. There were many different groups of people living in China all through its history. It has a written history that goes back 3,500 years

    4. The art that the early Chinese people made dates back to about 4,000 B.C.

    5. This bird is carved out of stone and is very, very old. Does it look like a bird? What other animal could this stone carving be?

    6. This is a bird too. It is made out of clay. How is this bird different from the bird carved from stone? Describe feathers on this bird that you would not find on birds.

    7. Look at this tiger. It is made out of clay. Look at the designs on the tiger. How are the designs similar to the designs on the clay bird? The artist made the tiger strong with strong legs, neck, and tail.

    8. This is a front view of the tigers face. There are two tigers that make a set. We are looking at two different tiger faces. How do the tigers make you feel? What would use these tigers for if you owned them?

    9. This horse is made out of jade which is a green stone used to make special objects. Before electricity was invented artists made beautiful jade sculptures using hand tools. Look at the details on the horse.

    10. Japan Japans culture is not as old as Chinas. Japan had been isolated from much of the world for parts of its history. The Japanese islands were easy to defend and kept invaders out and kept most Japanese at home.

    11. Let us look at some of the animals sculptures from Japan. First look at this clay horse. Look how strong the artist made the legs and neck. Look at the details on the horse. How is this horse different from the jade horse?

    12. Look at this clay dog. It was made many years after the horse by a different artist. How different does the dog look from the horse? How are they alike?

    13. The last animal we will look at is this monkey. It was made as decoration to be put in a home for the family to look at and enjoy. Monkeys in Japanese stories are tricksters and mischief makers. This sculpture is carved out of wood and painted with lacquer.

    14. We have looked at some animal sculptures from China and Japan. Can you name one thing you learned from looking at these sculptures? What new words did you learn? Which animal did you like the best and why?
